Minimum Qualifications:

• Must possess a minimum of Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education or equivalent

• Must possess at least Class III Certificate of Competency from a recognised Maritime Institution.

• Training in STCW mandatory courses including personal survival techniques, personal safety and social responsibilities, elementary first aid, fire prevention and fire fighting, security awareness, proficiency in survival craft (PSC) and rescue boats (RB).

Experience:

• Recorded sea-time of not less than 5 years, 2 of which MUST have been at the level of seaman of a vessel not less than 50 GRT.

• Excellent written and spoken English skills.

• Physically able to work for long hours in all weather conditions.

Duties and Responsibilities

The quartermaster is responsible assisting the Captain/Master in navigation including carrying out the following functions:-

• Steering ship maintaining visual communications with other ships.

• Steer ship under direction of the Captain, or directs helmsman to steer, following designated course.

• Stand by wheel when ship is on automatic pilot verifies accuracy of course by comparing with magnetic compass.

• Relay specified signals to ships in vicinity, using
visual signaling devices, like blinker light semaphore.

• Give directions to crew engaged in cleaning wheelhouse and quarter deck after.

• Maintain ships log while in port, and stands gangway watch to prevent unauthorized persons from boarding ship.

• Update navigational publications and charts during their watch.

• Keeping records of the ship.
