  • The International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC) was established to enhance operational capacity for peacekeeping through training, education and research for the benefit of military, police, and civilian staff.

  • The Centre wishes to engage a competent candidate on a short-term contractual basis in the following position:

    Researcher

    Job Purpose

  • This position is located in the Peace and Security Research Department (PSRD), IPSTC.

  • Reporting directly to Head of Research, the successful candidates will be responsible for; developing, conducting and implementing effective evidence-based research that will underpin the Centre’s activities including the design of training programs.

  • The researcher will also oversee the publication of papers with a focus on gender, peace and security. The Researcher will provide high-level and strategic advice on research and training in IPSTC’s ongoing or emerging capacity building activities and assist in developing the IPSTC research capacity.

    Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducting demand-led; evidence-based and policy-oriented research on relevant gender, peace and security issues in Eastern Africa region and beyond, and presenting papers and related publications such as occasional papers, journals and issue briefs.

  • Conducting on-the-field training needs assessment to collect evidence-based information that will inform IPSTC training activities in Peace and security.

  • Analyzing gendered nature of emerging conflict trends within Eastern Africa with a view to contributing substantively to other knowledge products being developed by the Research department.

  • Provide support in organizing the launch of other relevant research events including drafting concept notes/papers, preparing draft agendas, moderation/participating in relevant conferences, meetings, symposiums, colloquiums and workshops.

  • Responsible for leading and undertaking high profile research activity for the organization, as well as supporting other colleagues to deliver high quality research.

  • Conducting background research and updating country profiles in Eastern Africa with focus on issues related to Peace Support Operations.

  • Play a role in enhancing the visibility of IPSTC and strengthening the dissemination of the Centre’s research finding at local, regional and international levels.

  • Providing inputs for training related to peace operations at tactical, operational and strategic level education such as the development of training material and case studies for training courses.

  • Developing and utilizing appropriate research methodologies & methods, evaluation strategies and research tools.

  • Preparing background notes, briefings, speeches, talking points and other inputs for presentations by Senior Management on issues of relevance.

  • In consultation with the Head of Applied Research, substantively contribute to the strategic planning and scoping work for subsequent annual research activities.

  • Keeping abreast of useful information, resources, equipment, tools, technical and technological development in research and fields of interests, to ensure research capacity is up-to-date.

  • Carrying out other research tasks as assigned.

  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal especially in areas such as report writing, journal publications, conference presentations, and in the ability to translate theoretical, technical, and statistical concepts into accessible reports.

  • Mastery of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint is essential. Knowledge of data visualization software, such as dashboard and tableau are a strong asset.

  • Working knowledge of advanced quantitative and qualitative data analysis software package. SPSS knowledge is essential, while working knowledge of NVIVO is desirable.

    Qualifications, Required Work Experience and Skills/Knowledge

    Education

  • Ph.D. in Peace, Conflict and Security Studies; International Studies/Relations; Gender and Development; Political Science or other related field is required.

    Work Experience

  • A minimum of five years of progressive experience in designing and conducting empirical research in peace, conflict and security (preferably in the areas of conflict prevention, conflict management and post conflict peace building) or related area, data analysis and in writing evidence-based reports and teaching materials with practical recommendations is required.

  • Experience of giving presentations and delivering lectures to large audience is required.

  • Understanding or relevant experience in curriculum design and training evaluation is desirable.

  • Experience in gender peace and security.

  • Experience of organizing events/ workshops/symposiums and writing occasional papers, issue briefs and newsletters is desirable.

  • Previous experience in peace and security training institution as well as demonstrated experience training and supervising other staff on research/evaluation projects would be a strong asset.

    Language

  • For the post advertised, fluency in spoken and written English is required. Working knowledge of at least another UN language is a requirement.

    Major Deliverables

  • Publish 1-2 Occasional/Policy papers and 1-2 Issue/Policy briefs (per contract year); edit and prepare research articles for publication and dissemination in the Centre’s Amani Africa Journal.

    Knowledge

  • Mastery of research in gender, peace and security issues.

  • Knows applied process research, from the setting of research agenda, through field visits to publication of materials.

  • Able to identify, extract, analyze and format data from a wide variety of standard and non-standard sources.

  • Has in-depth knowledge of Peace Support Operations.

  • Has knowledge and experience interpreting the women peace and security framework into research programs.
