Job Description

The International Treatment Preparedness Coalition (ITPC), is a global activist network fighting for universal access to treatment. ITPC is an issue-based organization focused on HIV (and related diseases) treatment access across the world.

The Director of Finance is one of only two Directors at ITPC and works alongside the Director of Global Programs and Advocacy to ensure that ITPC meets its strategic objectives.

This position is responsible for the financial management of the organization and reports directly to the Executive Director of ITPC. This position is based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Main Responsibilities

Financial Strategy and Direction:

  • Manage the development and ownership of the finance strategies for the organization
    Serve as the strategic lead to the finance team at ITPC
  • Provide comprehensive and routine financial updates to the Executive Director
    Represent the finance function at committee and Board meetings as needed

    Finance Department Management:

  • Build and manage a competent finance team
    Develop the competence and effectiveness of the finance team
  • Lead the finance team in working effectively across the organization
  • Build appropriate internal controls, systems and processes to ensure effective financial management at an organization level
  • Budget preparation and monitoring
  • Financial statements
  • Cash flow and forecasting
  • Anticipating financial needs
  • Asset registers
  • Risk management
  • Taking initiative to institute new policies as needed
  • Financial software management

    Statutory and audit requirements:

  • Oversee the preparation of the annual financial reports
  • Serve as the ITPC focal point during all audits (internal, external, grant/donor mandated)
  • Ensure compliance with accounting, tax, and other laws and regulatory standards

    Budgeting, Reporting and Donor Relations:

  • Oversee the production and preparation of the organization’s annual budget, working closely with the Director of Global Programs and Advocacy
  • Oversee all donor reporting activities and procedures, ensuring accurate and timely submission of all donor financial reports
    Support on fundraising opportunities as required

    Partner organizations:

  • Contribute to the development and strengthening of financial capacity within all required partner organizations
  • Manage the ITPC global finance team to provide financial management support to partners and with a focus on strengthening efficiency and value for money

    Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) or related field with a minimum of 5 years of experience working in an international
    context, nonprofit, philanthropic sector or related field is required.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in with 10 years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of Master’s Degree.
  • Professional qualification such as certified Accountant or Chartered Public Accountant (CPA), with internationally recognized accounting body is required.
  • Membership in an international accounting body such as ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW, ICAS, ACPA or equivalent is required.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex multi-country contracts and multi-million US$ budgets with organizations from developing countries is required.
  • Previous work with PEPFAR, The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria or Unitaid – a plus.
  • Demonstrable and progressively responsible leadership experience in financial management and accounting is required.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing staff and leading teams.
  • Must have the ability to be flexible with work time and scheduling.
  • Must have the ability to travel 30% of total work time.
  • Commitment to ITPC’s mission and to the health and human rights of all people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS is essential.
  • Experience of implementing accounting systems.

  • Advanced computer skills, particularly MS Office package (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Strong written and oral communication (including presentation) skills in English. In addition to English, ability to work in another language is a plus.
  • Comfort working collaboratively and managing staff both in-person & virtually (using Zoom, Skype and other tools).
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to work with colleagues from different cultural backgrounds and perspectives (Inter-culturalism - teams embedded in different cultures/countries).
  • Exceptionally quick learner (technical content and people/teams).
  • Persons living with HIV and/or HCV and who are from key affected populations are strongly encouraged to apply.
