Position: The Gender Specialist will work under the direct supervision of the Monitoring, Evaluation Research and Gender Coordinator and will have frequent and strong interactions with the coordination and implementing teams.
She/he will be based in Soddo in Wolayta or in Shinshicho in Kembata-Tembaro zone (SNNPR), with frequent travels on the field and to the coordination offices in Kembata-Tembaro, Hadiya and Wolayta.
Detailed responsibilities:
The Gender specialist’s responsibilities will be to:
Conduct and/or support gender-related monitoring, studies and diagnosis
In 2021: Conduct a qualitative assessment on women in water user federations (their profiles, factors and constraints to play key roles)
In 2021: Realize an assessment on the women in traditional organizations (and female-only organization) and the ways to involve them in decision making process
Over the projects duration: conduct assessments, focus group discussions, study activities to progressively strengthen knowledge on gender issues raised by the projects’ design and implementation and team’s gender perception
Over the projects duration, ensure that the monitoring-evaluation system is gender-sensitive (disaggregation of data between genders, strengthened follow-up of gender-differentiated or gender-specific indicators, documentation of best practices…), especially starting in 2021 support the elaboration of the first projects’ gender action plan
Over the projects duration, ensure that thematic/cross-cutting studies are gender-sensitive (especially starting in 2021: a study on dairy value chain, a study on agrarian systems)
Support the continuous improvement of the gender consideration in Inter Aide projects
In 2021: ensure the preparation, follow-up and long-term integration of the results of the support provided by an external specialized consultancy for the integration of women in decisions related to water and sanitation governance
Over the projects duration, identify the needs of gender-specific or gender-sensitive activities to increase the participation and benefits of women (assertiveness training aimed at women in decision-making bodies, technical trainings targeting women…)
Over the projects duration, bring support to the coordination, implementing and administrative team as well as partners in how to build activities and decision-making processes including and benefitting women
Coordinate the gender mainstreaming in the whole organization
Sensitize and train the staff in the identification of gender issues and ways to improve their consideration throughout project implementation as well as administrative management
Support the implementation of a system to track gender-related difficulties and complaints and to provide support to the team through one or several gender focal staff
Respect IAF internal Rules
As IAF team member, the Gender mainstreaming officer represents IAF and as such should have a positive
and decent behaviour toward all actors she/he might encounter during her/his duties (All IAF staff, Communities, Government officials…).
As a minimum, she/he should respect IAF working hours: 2h30 to 6h30 & 7h30 to 11h30 (Ethiopian time), from Monday to Friday.
The Gender Specialist is expected to take her/his responsibilities fully and to report any difficulty or need to her/his superior. He/she might be required to fulfil other tasks given by her/his superior even if not mentioned in the present job description.
Job Requirements
Education:
Master (MSc, MA) or PhD in social science, development studies, gender studies or related field
Experience:
Minimum 5 years of experience working in gender integration in community development projects, preferably with more than 2 years in the field
Interests, Experience, Knowledge & Skills
Excellent research, analytical, synthesis and writing skills
Strong inclination towards social and field work
Inclination and high capacity to provide technical assistance and training
Strong organizational skills, ability to work autonomously and with a team
Outstanding social skills, ability to work with people from different background, educational level and perspectives
Excellent level in computer application software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
Previous work with NGO is a plus
Language: Excellent written and spoken command of English and Amharic
