Job Title: Laboratory Technician

Reports to: Regional Laboratory Services Coordinator

Duty Station: Kagadi

General Summary

The Laboratory Technician will work closely with facility teams to strengthen lab
systems and build capacity of supported laboratories to provide high quality TB and
HIV/AIDS services in line with national protocols.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support mentorship and training efforts to build capacity of facility teams to deliver
    high quality laboratory services.
  • Provide laboratory services to TB and HIV/AIDS patients attending IDI-supported
    health facilities in line with standard guidelines.
  • Establish equipment management and maintenance systems at supported
    laboratories to minimize downtime and ensure reliability of test results.
  • Support and monitor reliable supply chain management systems at supported
    facilities to avert stock out of critical lab commodities for TB and HIV/AIDS care.
  • Strengthen networks and coordination between supported facility labs and the
    national systems to ensure access to EID, Viral load, GeneXpert tests and resistance
    testing services.
  • Support QA/QC systems including PT and EQA for critical TB and HIV laboratory
    tests in line with established national systems.
  • Support development of SOPs to guide facility teams to provide lab services in
    accordance with WHO SLAMTA/SLIPTA protocols using standard data
    management tools.
  • Support performance monitoring initiatives and routine data use activities at IDIsupported health facilities to guide implementation of project activities.
  • Support the health workers to identify, implement and document continuous
    quality improvement activities along the HIV continuum of response and treatment
    cascades.
  • Support health facilities to compile and submit accurate HMIS and programmatic
    reports according to project, donor and Ministry of Health timelines.
  • Any other duties as may
    reasonably be assigned from time to time.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Up-to-date knowledge of national HIV and TB diagnostic and management
    protocols
  • Good communication, organization and management skills
  • Understands client confidentiality and exhibits high level of ethical conduct
  • Has basic computer literacy including word processing, excel, internet and
    power point.
  • Good understanding of public health systems and local government policies.

    Educational Requirements:

  • Diploma in Biomedical Laboratory technology.
  • Full and active registration with the Allied Health Professionals council.
  • Training in laboratory quality management systems and biosafety
