ILRI Research Fellow – PhD Studies - Strengthening Veterinary Public Health Jobs in Uganda


On behalf of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Bioversity International1 is now seeking for a qualified candidate to serve as a Research Fellow.

Both ILRI and Bioversity International are CGIAR Research Centres.

Under the supervision of the ILRI Scientist, the Research Fellow will contribute to the project Leptospirosis and brucellosis in livestock at ruminant slaughter in Uganda: serological and molecular investigations.

This project aims at improving the health of food producing animals and as a consequence the health of people who work in the processing of animal sourced food. Leptospirosis and brucellosis are endemic in Africa and potentially life-threatening diseases. Sentinel studies for the occurrence of leptospirosis and brucellosis will be implemented in animals at slaughter (serological, microbiological and molecular techniques). Data will be incorporated into training activities to educate workers regarding disease risks and ways to reduce transmission.

Responsibilities

  • Literature search and data analysis on the occurrence of zoonoses including leptospirosis and brucellosis in animals in Eastern Africa
    Observational studies for risk behaviours and practices during the slaughter process
  • Sample ruminants in slaughterhouses in Uganda
  • Perform bacteriological, serological and molecular tests for identification and typing of Brucella spp. and Leptospira spp. from animal samples
  • Perform trace back analyses to understand the
    geographical distribution of Brucella and Leptospira in livestock in Uganda
  • Liaise with project partners for the training of relevant slaughterhouse personnel

    Requirements

  • Relevant MSc degree in natural sciences (Veterinary Medicine, Biology, Biotechnology etc.) from a recognized university
  • Knowledge of the veterinary sector is an asset; demonstrable affinity with research on zoonotic diseases
  • Knowledge and experience with serological and molecular methods
  • Proven ability to work in interdisciplinary teams and interest in working within a multinational research program
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English, especially regarding academic writing and presentations
  • Successful applicant will be expected to secure university admission to a PhD program within 3 months
