ILRI Research Fellow – PhD Studies - Control of Rift Valley Fever Vacancies in Uganda


On behalf of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Bioversity International is now seeking for a qualified candidate to serve as a Research Fellow.

Both ILRI and Bioversity International are CGIAR Research Centres.

Under the supervision of the ILRI Scientist, the Research Fellow will contribute to the project Socio-economic research on Peste des Petits Ruminants.

The overall objective of the project is to determine the ex-ante social and economic impact of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) control options in livestock production systems in selected sites in Uganda.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and adapt tools and protocols to assess drivers of PPR, assess gendered impacts of the disease, and current knowledge, perceptions and practices on PPR control within selected small ruminant production systems
  • Lead field data collection together with survey teams
  • Conduct participatory group model building workshops using system dynamics (SD) principles and techniques
  • Build SD models to assess the impact of PPR on ruminant production and trade, and ex-ante and ex-post impact of various control options on livelihoods, especially vaccination, given contextual drivers of disease
  • Assess farmer willingness to pay for PPR vaccine, accessibility and acceptability
  • Conduct focus group discussions (FGDs) with men and women farmers, value chain actors and other stakeholders to assess constraints to uptake of control
    options and vaccine
  • Curate data collected for storage in a publicly accessible repository
  • Thesis and publications write-up

    Requirements

  • MSc degree in Agricultural Economics or Economics
  • Extensive knowledge on livestock production systems and value chains in Uganda
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively in rural areas to conduct fieldwork
  • Ability and willingness to work in large multidisciplinary teams
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills in English
  • Excellent data management skills
  • Proficiency in data analysis and modelling software such as STATA, R, STELLA, etc.
  • Experience working in livestock value chains and production systems, will be an added advantage
  • Successful applicant will be expected to secure university admission to a PhD program within 3 months
