The Position:

  • The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Germplasm Health Unit Supervisor to implement Germplasm Health Unit activities under the Genebank Platform.

    General:

  • The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. http://www.ilri.org.

    Main duties and responsibilities:

    • Plans, coordinates, implements and supervises day-to-day activities at the Germplasm Health Unit;

    • Develops and optimizes diagnostic tests for virus, bacteria, phytoplasma and fungi in forages, including use of molecular tools;

    • Undertakes and supervises germplasm health testing activities to ensure that seed are suitable for export or storage in the genebank;

    • Deduces germplasm health tests results and issues phytosanitary health statements for the tested seeds;

    • Liaises with Genebank in acquisition of Phytosanitary Certificate for germplasm distribution and Plant Import Permit for germplasm acquisition from the relevant NPPO;

    • Plans and implement field and greenhouse procedures for elimination of viral, bacterial, phytoplasma and fungal diseases from the genebank forage collection;

    • Maintains Quality Management System for seed health testing and post-entry screening, including continuous update of the relevant Standard Operating Procedures;

    • Curates and maintains
    germplasm health testing records;

    • Initiates research and contributes to fundraising of related germplasm health proposals.

    • Guides and supervises technicians, technical assistants and interns attached to the Germplasm Health Unit;

    • Manages reagent, consumables and equipment inventory for the Germplasm Health Laboratory;

    • Participates and contributes to all Genebank Platform’s Germplasm Health Unit Project meetings and activities;

    • Performs any other related duties as may be required.

    Academic and professional qualifications:

    Education:

    • At least MSc in plant pathology or relevant discipline.

    Experience:

    • Seven years hands-on laboratory and field experience with plant diseases two of which are in managing a plant health testing laboratory.

    Skills:

    • Experience in standard seed-health diagnostic methods (e.g., ELISA, TBIA, dot blot, NASH/LAMP, fungal identification and PCR based methods) and next-generation sequencing technologies for pathogen detection.

    • Experience with laboratory organization, supervision and optimization of workflows.

    • Experience with computer packages (word processing, spreadsheet, graphics and data management) and use of data analysis softwares.
