ILRI Consultancy - Feeds and Forage Resources in West Africa

  • International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a consultant to contribute to projects on sustainable livestock systems and feed resource management in West Africa (Senegal, Ghana, Mali and Burkina Faso)

  • The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR Research Centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.

    Scope of Work

  • The consultant will undertake tasks for two projects as described below.

  • A project funded through the University of Florida to undertake feed resource assessments in Burkina Faso (EQUIP). The consultant will:

  • Work with national partners to update a feeds database using survey results from across Burkina Faso about feed availability and quality. These include results using ILRI’s FEAST and G-FEAST tools, biomass evaluation in the field, and surveys about feed availability and types in feed markets.

  • Make the database available to the relevant Burkina Faso national partner (INERA or Ministry of Animal Resources) for them to publish on the internet. This includes ensuring the metadata for the data base are fully complete and understandable.

  • Attend regular project meetings and act as ILRI’s local point of contact for EQUIP in Burkina Faso including liaising with national colleagues to advance and consolidate ongoing project activities where ILRI is involved as they arise.

  • A new World Bank funded project (Accelerating the Impact of CGIAR Climate Change Research in Africa – AICCRA) in Senegal.

  • Lead a work package to develop a case study on participatory evaluation, conservation and efficient use
of feed resources for enhanced climate resilience of agro-pastoral systems. The tasks include:

  • Rapid assessment of existing and potential feed resources, using feed market surveys, ILRI’s FEAST and G-FEAST tools, and consultation with experts. The exact systems to be surveyed will be decided in consultation with the larger AICCRA team in Senegal.

  • Based on the feed assessments, and through farmer interviews and focus group discussions, begin to identify climate smart interventions and potential for uptake. By climate smart we mean feed interventions that help farmers adapt to climate change but also reduce GHG emission intensities, while ensuring improved productivity.
