icipe is a pan-African and non-profit Centre of Excellence for research and development and capacity building in insect science and its applications. Its mission is to help alleviate poverty, ensure food and nutritional security and improve the overall health status of peoples of the tropics by developing and extending management tools and strategies for harmful and useful arthropods, while preserving the natural resource base through research and capacity building.
Since its establishment in 1970, icipe has become a significant contributor to science and innovation required to meet the health and food security challenges of sub-Saharan Africa. The Centre has achieved this status by developing
alternative and environmentally friendly pest and vector management technologies and products that are effective, selective, non-polluting, non-resistance inducing, and are affordable to resource-limited rural and urban communities.
icipe is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya with offices in Ethiopia and Uganda, a major station on the shores of Lake Victoria, and several other field stations in Kenya. Employing close to 500 international and national staff, icipe also
has approximately 150 graduate students who contribute to its research portfolio annually. The Centre currently has operations in more than 40 African countries, and thriving partnerships with universities and research organizations

Overall Purpose of the Job
Reporting to the Head of the Social Sciences and Impact Assessment Unit, the successful candidate will conceptualise, lead, and provide technical oversight to multiple research and projects/programmes focused on gender. The candidate will develop gender strategies for projects and undertake qualitative and quantitative research through a gender lens that contributes to scaling technologies and enhancing women participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) higher education.
Conduct quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method gender research using primary and
secondary data and advanced estimation methods.
Work closely with biophysical and social scientists to conceptualise, design and implement
proposals and projects in a gender lens, as well as write research papers and disseminate results.
Develop research protocols and comprehensive gender disaggregated survey tools and strengthen the use of mixed methods and gender transformative approaches.
Work with a team of biophysical and social scientists to integrate gender elements in monitoring and evaluation frameworks at project and
Support the development of staff and partners’ capacity in gender to mainstream gender and implement gender action.
Write high quality gender and non-gender economic research reports, peer-reviewed publications, and policy briefs for a broad spectrum of stakeholders.
Provide professional mentoring to students and staff and supervise their research activities
Organise webinars and seminars, and lead policy advocacy efforts related to women’s
Share gender lessons with a broad spectrum of stakeholders using different communication platforms.
Review the implementation of gender strategies of project/program.
Represent the Regional Coordination Unit (RCU) of the Regional Scholarship and Innovation
Fund (RSIF), Social Sciences and Impact Assessment unit and other icipe programmes in genderrelated forums.
Regularly review, update and implement the RSIF gender strategy.
Prepare funding proposals to support the implementation of the RSIF gender strategy.
Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
A PhD degree in gender development studies and agricultural/development economics or related discipline (sociology, rural development) from a recognized university.
A minimum of six years’ postdoctoral experience in gender research, analysis and
mainstreaming in developing countries,
Demonstrated skills to produce peer-reviewed publications and high-quality reports.
Experience working in Africa and in a multicultural setting.
Willingness to travel extensively to collect and supervise data collection in rural villages.
Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English.
Demonstrated capabilities in gender research and impact assessment using advanced qualitative and quantitative methods.
Practical knowledge and skills in designing and collecting household and women’s empowerment in Agriculture index (WEAI) survey.
Expertise in the use of statistical software packages such as Stata to analyse data.
Ability to multi-task, take initiative to resolve issues, and work effectively with minimal
