  • icipe is a pan-African and non-profit Centre of Excellence for research and development and capacity building in insect science and its applications. Its mission is to help alleviate poverty, ensure food and nutritional security
    and improve the overall health status of peoples of the tropics by developing and extending management tools and strategies for harmful and useful arthropods, while preserving the natural resource base through research and capacity building.

  • Since its establishment in 1970, icipe has become a significant contributor to science
    and innovation required to meet the health and food security challenges of sub-Saharan Africa. The Centre has achieved this status by developing alternative and environmentally friendly pest and vector management technologies and products that are effective, selective, non-polluting, non-resistance inducing, and are affordable to resource-limited rural and urban communities.

  • icipe is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya with offices in Ethiopia and Uganda, a major station on the shores of Lake Victoria, and several other field stations in Kenya. Employing close to 500 international and national staff, icipe also has approximately 150 graduate students who contribute

  • icipe seeks to recruit a Research Officer I in the Human Health Theme. The position is tenable in Nairobi at the icipe Duduville campus. This is two-year contract, renewable subject to continued project needs, funding for the position, and performance of the staff member. This is a nationally recruited position. A competitive

    Overall Purpose of the Job

  • This position will support the activities of a Wellcome Trust funded project that aims to identify the underlying biological and ecological drivers of persistent malaria transmission in Kenya. The Research Officer I will be expected to:

  • Conduct field survey of mosquitoes, with a key interest in anopheline malaria vectors.

  • Identify the vectors to the species level (morphologically
    and molecularly).

  • Perform a variety of experiments that involve insecticide bioassays, and pathogen isolation /identification by use of serology and molecular methods as well as sequencing.

  • Set up experiments that encompass vector manipulations in a level 2 Arthropod Containment
    Laboratory (ACL-2) in addition to rearing and maintenance of vector colonies while adhering to correct standard operating procedures and health and safety guidelines.

    Specific Duties

    The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Conduct field surveys of malaria mosquito vectors in diverse sites, and identify the vectors
    morphologically and using molecular markers.

  • Rear mosquitoes from field collected specimens for experimental purposes.

  • Conduct insecticide resistance bioassays and screening for associated mechanisms.

  • Screen arthropod specimens for pathogens and blood meals.

  • Procure consumables and supplies for lab and field work.

  • Assist students and scientists in setting up experiments, data collection, and analysis.

  • Collate and analyse data and present monthly reports on progress.

  • Carry out any other duties commensurate with experience which may be assigned from time to time

    Requirements/Qualifications

  • Diploma in Biological Sciences.

  • Knowledge of inventory and biorepository management.

  • Knowledge of vector biology.

  • Good knowledge of clinical laboratory procedures.

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in an engaging laboratory and ACL-2 facility, mosquito taxonomy and lab experimental procedures.

    Core Competencies

  • Skills in morphological identification of diverse mosquitoes (and other arthropods e.g., ticks) molecular techniques, lab and field assays are essential.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision

    Other Desirable Attributes

  • Willing to engage in international travels where necessary.
