ICIPE Postdoctoral Fellow (Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics Unit) Scientist, Malaria Jobs in Kenya

  • icipe is a pan-African and non-profit Centre of Excellence for research and development and capacity building in insect science and its applications. Its mission is to help alleviate poverty, ensure food and nutritional security and
improve the overall health status of peoples of the tropics by developing and extending management tools and strategies for harmful and useful arthropods, while preserving the natural resource base through research and capacity building.

  • Since its establishment in 1970, icipe has become a significant contributor to science and
innovation required to meet the health and food security challenges of sub-Saharan Africa. The Centre has achieved this status by developing alternative and environmentally friendly pest and vector management technologies and products that are effective, selective, non-polluting, non-resistance inducing, and are affordable to
resource-limited rural and urban communities. icipe is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya with offices in Ethiopia and Uganda, a major station on the shores of Lake Victoria, and several other field stations in Kenya.

  • Employing close to 500 international and national staff, icipe also has approximately 150 graduate students who contribute to its research portfolio annually. The Centre currently has operations in more than 40 African countries, and thriving partnerships with universities and research organizations across the world. (www.icipe.org)

  • Bioinformatics has become a central tool in research, especially with the increase in the amount of genomics data generated. Genomic changes are one of the significant contributors to phenotypic variation. New technologies allow us to analyse which changes and to what degree these changes influence phenotypes and drive evolution.

  • One crucial genetic tool is the constantly evolving technology of next-generation sequencing, which allows researchers to decipher genomic changes at the highest resolution and help bridge the gap between genotypes and phenotypes. One of the most urgent aims of icipe’s genomics research is to better understand the genetic factors that enable insect species or populations to thrive as pests or vectors of diseases. Additionally, microbiome metagenomics and targeted molecular approaches have led to the discovery of diverse insect-specific viruses and endosymbiotic bacteria and fungi of mosquitoes, sand flies, and ticks. Some of the endosymbionts appear to inhibit the ability of vector-borne diseases to be transmitted by vector arthropods. Therefore, current research at icipe opens up new avenues of research to improve understanding of the genomic factors that predispose some arthropod species or populations to effectively transmit vector-borne diseases of humans, animals, and plants, while others do not.

  • In addition, emerging sequencing platforms such as the Oxford Nanopore Technologies have enabled researchers to sequence in-house, highlighting the growing need to analytical support. These new research avenues, coupled with the increased sequencing capacity, raise a need for enhanced capacity in bioinformatics, computational infrastructure, analysis pipelines and workflows, genomics data management, and controlled ontologies.

  • Therefore, icipe seeks to recruit a Postdoctoral Fellow (Bioinformatics) to work in the Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics Unit (MBBU) to support genomic data analysis, build computational standardised and reproducible
workflows, lead bioinformatics capacity building initiatives, and contribute to fundraising efforts. The
position is tenable in Nairobi at the icipe Duduville campus.

  • This is a two-year contract, renewable subject to continued project needs, funding for the position, and performance of the staff member. A competitive and generous compensation package will be offered to the right candidate for the position. Furthermore, the incumbent will receive paid annual vacation, return airfare for themselves and their dependents to their nominated home base each year, and dutyfree privileges. If the successful candidate is appointed from outside Kenya, he or she will be offered support to
relocate to the country and settle in Nairobi, Kenya.

    Living in Nairobi, Kenya

  • Nairobi is the capital and largest city of Kenya, with a population of over three million, hosts all the urban and social amenities, and offers a comfortable, convenient and pleasurable life. A wide variety of excellent international
schools and well-equipped medical facilities are open 24/7 in Nairobi.

  • The city is also accessible by various reputable international airline carriers. Nairobi has a thriving international research scene, hosting various CGIAR centres, as well as several UN agencies. Although it is important to be conscious of security, Kenyans are warm and welcoming of visitors.

    Overall purpose of the job

  • The job holder will offer icipe bioinformatics leadership, data analysis support, and capacity building.

    Specific duties

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Provide support for bioinformatics data analysis within icipe (genomics, transcriptomics, and metagenomics data).

  • Build bioinformatics capacity within the Centre by developing and maintaining analysis workflows, establishing infrastructure, and developing training programmes.

  • Develop and maintain bioinformatics software for different research projects, as well as adapting existing code and pipelines and providing programming support.

  • Assist the system administrator with the maintenance of the bioinformatics server.

  • Partner with other organisations that advance bioinformatics capacity in Africa.

  • Supervise students and interns in relevant projects.

  • Provide support to resource mobilisation and proposal development.

  • Establish active bioinformatics and computational biology research programmes that are relevant to icipe’s mission.
