ICIPE Head of Capacity Building and Institutional Development Unit Jobs in Kenya

  • icipe is a pan-African and non-profit Centre of Excellence for research and development and capacity building in insect science and its applications. Its mission is to help alleviate poverty, ensure food and nutritional security and improve the overall health status of peoples of the tropics by developing and extending management tools and strategies for harmful and useful arthropods, while preserving the natural resource base through research and capacity building.

  • Since its establishment in 1970, icipe has become a significant contributor to science and innovation required to meet the health and food security challenges of sub-Saharan Africa. The Centre has achieved this status by developing
    alternative and environmentally friendly pest and vector management technologies and products that are effective, selective, non-polluting, non-resistance inducing, and are affordable to resource-limited rural and urban communities.

  • icipe is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya with offices in Ethiopia and Uganda, a major station on the shores of Lake Victoria, and several other field stations in Kenya. Employing close to 500 international and national staff, icipe also
    has approximately 150 graduate students who contribute to its research portfolio annually. The Centre currently has operations in more than 40 African countries, and thriving partnerships with universities and research organizations

    Overall Purpose of the Job

  • The Head of Capacity Building and Institutional Development Unit will lead the team responsible for the Centre’s delivery of capacity building activities. The role involves operational and strategic elements requiring skills in leadership, planning and service development.

  • The Head of Capacity Building and Institutional Development Unit plays a significant role in managing key stakeholder relationships and
    the development of delivery programmes and services, and capacity building activities across two key result areas: the first being within the Centre’s plant, animal, human and environmental health themes, and the second being within icipe’s Regional Coordination Unit for the Regional Scholarships and Innovation Fund (RSIF) Project.

    Specific Duties within the Centre’s Themes:

  • Manage the icipe PhD and MSc postgraduate and other programmes, comprising Africa Regional Postgraduate Programme in Insect Sciences (ARPPIS) and Dissertation Research Internship Programme (DRIP), through calls, selection, orientation, annual evaluations, financial management, and reporting, in collaboration with partner universities, donors and icipe scientists.

  • Assess the capacity-strengthening needs of icipe and icipe partner institutions (African higher education and scientific research partners in the region) and develop and deliver training
    programmes to deliver on the long-term commitment of research and development.

  • Work with icipe partner institutions to implement effective and innovative capacity building and institutional development initiatives through:

  • Improving the interface and interchange of research and capacity building between regional
    and international organisations.

  • Establishing efficient result-oriented management, planning and monitoring of icipe partner institutions.

  • Develop a strategy and tools for monitoring the effectiveness of icipe’s capacity building

  • Develop and deliver training courses that enhance the ability of scientists, including
    postgraduate students, to become successful independent research scientists, including
    courses in science communications, scientific writing, grant writing, research methods,
    responsible conduct of research, and research compliance, health and safety.

  • Chair icipe’s Board of Training & Postgraduate Studies (IBTPS) meetings to provide guidance on (i) academic and welfare matters of icipe’s postgraduate scholars; (ii) training programmes for postgraduate scholars.

  • Mobilise resources, including developing fundraising proposals, to support continuity of icipe’s capacity
    building and institutional development.

  • Oversee icipe’s Information Resources Centre (Library).

  • Represent icipe at national, regional and international events, meetings and conferences.

  • Enhance the profile of the capacity building of icipe through various communication methods.

    Specific Duties within the Regional Coordination Unit for RSIF

  • As a senior manager within icipe’s Regional Coordination Unit for the Regional Scholarships and Innovation Fund (RSIF) Project (https://www.rsif-paset.org/), manage the doctoral scholarships and capacity building programme of RSIF:

  • Develop goals, strategic plans and policies, and make high-level decisions on the implementation and direction of the doctoral scholarships and capacity building programme of
    RSIF, and be accountable for the long-term success of the programme.

  • Manage a team of RSIF staff for the implementation of the doctoral scholarships and capacity building programme. § Be responsible for the identification and selection of RSIF partner organisations including, African Host Universities (AHUs) and International Partner Institutions /Universities.

  • Lead the creation and oversight of active networks of organisations between AHUs,
    international partners, including industry partners, and regional universities and research and development organisations.

  • Mobilise resources, including securing new, additional funding for RSIF.

  • Represent the RSIF, especially the doctoral scholarships and capacity building programme, at
    national, regional and international meetings and conferences.


  • PhD degree in biosciences, social sciences, modelling/data science, or geo-information - specifically in the fields of animal, human or crop health or related fields.

  • Strong scientific research background with a high degree of organisation, adaptability, and

  • At least 10 years of mentoring and supervising graduate students.

  • Track record of developing and giving training courses and workshops in specific areas of expertise, including cross-cutting, professional development skills.

  • Ability and track record to network with a variety of stakeholders, including national, regional and international organisations, donors, individual research scientists, university faculty and students.

  • Excellent presentation and communication (oral and written) skills in English.

  • Strong training delivery skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; be an active and exemplary team leader able to build teams and
    maintain harmonious relationships in a multi-cultural environment.

  • Ability to generate high-quality written reports.

  • Ability to work with other professionals and without supervision.

  • Strong computer literacy, especially with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, Teams, Sharepoint).

  • At least 10 years’ post-doctorate experience in multi-stakeholder project management and delivery, 5 of these at a supervisory level.

  • Extensive track record in managing successful capacity building programmes.

  • At least 3 years’ experience in working with African universities.

  • Previous experience in a similar position would be a definite advantage.

    Other desirable attributes

  • Keeps up-to-date with the latest developments in in their area of expertise specifically, and in Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology (ASET) fields generally.

  • Commitment and passion for capacity building and mentoring of young research scientists.

  • Knowledge of French would be an added advantage.
