  • The Soil Laboratory Supervisor will be a member of the Health & Nutrition (H&N) team to supervise and manage the soil laboratory, maximize quality sample output and reporting of results within required timeframes.

  • The ideal candidate for this position must be able to exhibit assertiveness as this position entails the supervision of staff, possess customer liaison, good communication skills and must not be colour blind. Minimum 5 years’ experience in relevant discipline in a routinized high throughput soil and leaf testing laboratory non-negotiable. Knowledge of quality management and participation in the maintenance of accreditation status, coupled with client liaison and good communication skills

    Primary Job Responsibilities but not limited to:

    Reporting of results:

  • Data quality control

  • Evaluating results against QC data.

  • Reviewing data against set controls and doing drift corrections.

  • Evaluating results according to norms and internal analysis relationships.

  • Data processing and data entry.

  • Configuring customer reports in SLIMS.

  • Reporting results on customer specified reports.

  • Attend to customer queries related samples.

    Personnel Management:

  • Personnel development

  • In-service training in order to develop and optimize skills

  • Continuously measurement of skills and identify shortcomings.

  • Develop and implement training plans based on shortcomings.

  • Responsible for problem solving, advice and guidance on technical matters.

  • Motivation.

  • Identify and co-ordinate attendance to training courses

  • Effectively manage workload distribution and schedules

  • Effective leave planning according to workload requirements and operational responsibilities

  • Effective management of discipline according to company policies and procedures

  • Promote good labour relations and effectively manage conflict

  • Maintain safety standards and effectively deal with casualties and injuries according to company policies and procedures

  • Set and maintain service standards

  • Responsible for ensuring that company working hours are strictly adhered to.

    Performing tests:

  • Ensure good housekeeping is maintained within the section.

  • Monitor standards and controls used within the section to ensure accurate results are being produced and that no negative trends are developing.

  • Must be willing to work overtime when necessary.

  • Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.

  • Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by direct line manager.

  • Planning of tests and evaluation of results:

  • Monitor the technical accuracy of results and ensure remedial action is taken where necessary and data is recorded.

  • Monitors consumable items within the department to ensure that stock levels are maintained.

  • Schedule work to ensure customer requirements are achieved.

  • Ensure worksheets are generated in advance to ensure smooth workflow through the section.

    Method modification and development and validation of new methods:

  • Ensure detailed records are kept of all validation, experimental and investigative work undertaken, and the required technical reports are submitted.

    Quality System:

  • Responsible for control and maintenance of all section records.

  • Responsible and authorized to investigate and process nonconforming issues and implement corrective and preventive actions.

  • Responsible and authorized to investigate and process improvement request issues and implement corrective and preventive actions.

  • Responsible for personnel technical competence.

    Responsible for physical resources:

  • Control instrument inventory

  • Equipment commissioning

  • Control of calibration and maintenance program

  • Control equipment register and instrument logs

  • Review of data from defect equipment

  • In-house repairs (major)

  • Responsible for control over monitoring, maintaining and housekeeping of accommodation and environment.

  • Quality assurance of analytical results

    Managerial Duties:

  • Customer liaison.

  • Responsible for Health and Safety within the section.

  • Coordinate and liaise with shift leaders to ensure effective operation of shifts when required.

  • Ensure that disciplinary action is taken by and against subordinates not following set procedures and/or those responsible for errors.

    Authorities

    Performing tests:

  • Authority to ensure all testing within the laboratory complies with the quality management system (ISO17025 and SANAS).

  • Planning of tests and evaluation of results

  • Authority to liaise with clients regarding queries.

  • Authority to sign test reports.

  • Reporting opinions and interpretations

  • Authority to report analytical results, which can include opinions and interpretations when requested, to the customer.

    Specific authority

  • Cease the use of any equipment that may be deemed to constitute a safety hazard or enter hazardous environments without the necessary knowledge and protection and report the situation to higher authority to take action.

  • Cease to carry on with work that may affect the quality (integrity) of services and report the situation to higher authority to take action.

  • Initiate a formal improvement request when a deviation of the system occurs, possible improvements are identified or when nonconformity is identified.

    Managerial Duties:

  • Authorized to implement and maintain relevant documentation required for accreditation and keep it current.

  • Authorized and responsible for effective and appropriate utilization of staff, equipment and facilities within the section.
