Summary of position:

The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) is a worldwide network of professionals in international business development (IBD), with preferred access to business knowledge and contacts, who are committed to advancing Canadian interests abroad.

These positions contribute to the delivery of the IBD program at the mission in accordance with the TCS Core Services and Government of Canada policies for international trade, investment, and innovation, with the objective of helping Canadian clients make better business decisions abroad.

The High Commission of Canada in Accra, Ghana is soliciting applications for a Trade Commissioner position with FPDS supporting functions as a back-up.

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Trade Commissioner and Trade Program Manager, the Trade Commissioner supports and contributes to the delivery of the IBD program of the Commercial Program at the High Commission of Canada to Ghana (e.g. promotes trade, investment, and innovation collaboration between Canada and the countries of responsibility, Ghana, Togo, and Sierra Leone, in priority and reactive sectors, including Clean technology, Education, etc.); organizes special events and initiatives (including high-level visits of government officials, industry representatives, etc.); contributes to analysis and reporting on economic, fiscal and trade policy issues; oversees the client relationship management database and ensures timely inputs; represents the High Commission in contact with nationals and officials of the countries of responsibility, or other interlocutors; develops and maintains awareness of the local environment and builds a network of relationships; plays a supervising role and provides administrative support to the program when required; contributes to on-line/social media presence; performs other related duties; and supports the overall work of the Section.

Essential qualifications

  • Applicants must clearly and explicitly demonstrate in both their application letter and résumé that they meet the essential qualifications on education, language and

  • Only candidates that meet the language, experience and education qualifications will be invited for assessment.


  • Minimum bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.


  • Fluency in English (oral & written).
  • Fluency in French (oral and written).


  • Recent experience* in managing client and stakeholder relationships;
  • Recent experience* in providing client service support to customers/clients;
  • Recent experience* in the use of computer software such as Microsoft Suites, Internet search engines, and social media tools;
  • Recent experience is defined as a minimum of two years in the last 5 years.

    Rated Requirements
  • The Rated Requirements relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies will also be assessed.
  • Methods of assessment may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview, role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

  • Knowledge of the political, business, security and economic environment in Ghana;
  • Basic knowledge of managing the financial aspects of programming e.g. working with budgets, tracking expenditures;


  • Ability to analyze and evaluate files/situations, exercise good judgment and make sound recommendations;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional interpersonal relationships with clients, colleagues, and supervisors;
  • Ability to manage own time, set priorities and meet deadlines.

    Asset Qualifications:
  • Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications.
  • Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications in their cover letter and CV.
  • Experience working in a government environment or an international organization;
  • Supervision experience;
  • Master’s degree from a recognized university in a field related to the position, including but not limited to: commerce, finance, international trade and economics;
  • Canada’s commercial relation with Ghana;
  • Canadian and Ghana government policies, programs and priorities, including trade, investment and innovation policies, programs and institutions.
