  • Heifer International Zambia is recruiting to fill a short-term assignment for Community Facilitators (CFs) under the World Food Program funded Smallholder Farmers Support Project situated in Mazabuka and Gwembe district of Southern Province.

  • The goal of the project is to bridge the knowledge gap on nutrition among community members and to enhance diversified agricultural production and productivity for increased income and access to food through facilitating access to markets and financial services among the target smallholder farmers.

  • The CFs will be based right in the communities of Mazabuka and Gwembe districts.

  • Heifer pursues this mission by providing resources, linkages and capacity building to help struggling families move towards greater self-reliance and build sustainable future.

  • The CFs will report directly to the Project Manager based at Mazabuka Office and they will work closely with government health center staff, school production unit teachers, Agricultural extension staff, Community Health Volunteers and the project team.

  • Community Facilitator’s overall role is to work with communities to promote production and consumption of nutritious food.

  • S/he will provide training, monitor progress, provide technical advice, evaluate and report on activities in assigned communities and in alignment with the project plans, goals and other donor deliverables. .

    The Duties include among others

    • Dissemination of information on nutrition, hygiene and health education in the community;

    • Train school production unit teachers and pupils in gardening and crop production to ensure effective school production unit;

    • Facilitate the establishment of school gardens to promote good nutrition;

    • Promotion and formation of School Health and Nutrition Clubs (SHNCs);

    • Promote use of improved and energy efficient cookstoves to ensure that families prepare
    their food in an environmentally friendly manner;

    • Promote agricultural diversification and integrated farming

    • Train farmers in Climate Smart Agriculture including: conservation farming; promotion and support for the productive use of manure from livestock and crop residues; manure harvesting and composting; organic vegetable gardens;

    • Facilitate implementation of nutrition activities in conjunction community-based volunteers, lead farmers and project extension officers;

    • Work with other units to incorporate nutrition into programs such as farming as business schools and Village Savings and Lending groups;

    • Provide follow-up support to community-based volunteers and nutrition champions on nutrition activities;

    • Development of local fruits and vegetable calendars for targeted schools;

    • Train farmers on food storage and processing;

    • Collect data and maintain good recording system on performance of nutrition groups for inclusion in reports and data bases;

    • Make follow-ups through frequent visits to participating households, groups and communities;

    • Prepare periodic reports and document best practices and lessons learned

    Key Qualifications

  • Applicants should be in possession of a Certificate in Agriculture or community Development with minimum of six months field experience.

  • A Diploma in Food and Nutrition or Agricultural Education with some field experience will be added advantage.

    • Fluent in English and Tonga;

    • Ability to ride a bicycle;

    • Ability to establish priorities and work with minimum supervision;

    • Willing to work and live in rural areas
