Head, Insects for Food and Feed and Other Uses Jobs in Kenya icipe is a pan-African and non-profit Centre of Excellence for research and development and capacity building in insect science and its applications.
Its mission is to help alleviate poverty, ensure food and nutritional security and improve the overall health status of peoples of the tropics by developing and extending management tools and strategies for harmful and useful arthropods, while preserving the natural resource base through research and capacity building.
Since its establishment in 1970, icipe has become a significant contributor to science and innovation required to meet the health and food security challenges of sub-Saharan Africa.
The Centre has achieved this status by developing alternative and environmentally friendly pest and vector management technologies and products that are effective, selective, non-polluting, non-resistance inducing, and are affordable to resource-limited rural and urban communities.
icipe is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya with offices in Ethiopia and Uganda, a major station on the shores of Lake Victoria, and several other field stations in Kenya.
Employing close to 500 international and national staff, icipe also has approximately 150 graduate students who contribute to its research portfolio annually.
The Centre currently has operations in more than 40 African countries, and thriving partnerships with universities and research organizations across the world
Overall Purpose of the Job
Insects for Food and Feed and Other Uses (INSEFF) Programme is among the most exciting and fastest growing research programmes at icipe, and this position allows a senior scientist to be at the forefront of this nascent yet exciting research area.
The ideal candidate is a visionary thinker with broad experience in insects for food and feed: cataloguing, mass production, wild harvesting, nutritional profiling, formulation, processing, post-harvest handling, food safety and regulations, and socio-economic aspects (marketing, awareness creation and harnessing indigenous knowledge).
The successful candidate must have outstanding discipline to work in a fast-growing environment to keep the institution at the leading edge of R&D work related to insects for food and feed.
The successful leader will develop and deploy capabilities to support programmes and projects including forging external partnerships with like-minded institutions in the field.
The selected candidate will contribute to a multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional team applying various technological approaches to utilize insects as food and feed.
The aim is to contribute to icipe's overall mission, which is to alleviate poverty by ensuring food security, improving health, protecting the environment, and building the capacity of researchers and communities across the developing world through the application of insect sciences.
The successful candidate will:
Lead INSEFF within icipe’s strategic R4D activities, by providing leadership, influence and hands-on engagement related to insects for food and feed.
Ensure the Centre’s leading role in the area of insects for food and feed, by developing and spearheading relevant and cutting-edge R&D activities related to the topic (e.g. insect therapeutic products, mass rearing and harvesting techniques, optimization and scaling of production systems,nutritional analysis).
Proactively facilitate formulation and commercialization of novel products by linking with the private sector and other downstream stakeholders.
Lead a core team of domain experts and an extended team of practitioners in the programme working across various strategic projects.
Collaborate with experts to address post-harvest handling, processing, food safety, socio-economic aspects and policy research to guide the development of standards and legislation foruse of insects for food and feed.
Work in collaboration with colleagues in the thematic area where the programme is based and with the wider icipe research teams, to facilitate research and capacity building activities across the Centre.
Promote and establish collaborative linkages with national, regional, and international institutions in the field of insects for food and feed.
Ensure growth of the Programme by attracting external funding.
Act as a spokesperson for INSEFF in local and international fora.10.Manage, supervise and motivate programme staff and students, to ensure innovation and the practice of good science resulting in high-quality publications.
The ideal candidate should have a PhD in entomology or a related discipline relevant to the skills listed above.
Minimum 10 years’ experience in your chosen field/discipline.
Excellent research and publications record.
Excellent communication skills.•Ability to undertake field/ international travel.
Strong track record in an area of insect research and development as demonstrated by publication record.
Experience related to insect for food and feed is desirable, but not a must.
Strong candidates that could use parallel entomology knowledge and that have a passion to work in the field of insects for food and feed are equally encouraged to apply.
History of resource mobilization and securing external support for a portfolio of research and development activities.
Proven track record of managing complex projects and research governance – with financial, human resources and administrative responsibilities.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, experience working with and interacting effectively with a variety of multidisciplinary teams and demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines and international institutions and technical agencies.
Other Desirable Attributes
Experience in working with the private sector (e.g. commercialization of insect products).
Experience with aspects related to socio-economics (e.g. marketing and regulatory frameworks related to insects for food and feed).
Ability to create and foster an innovative work environment and strong team building skills to deliver on agreed goals.
High degree of organization, adaptability and prioritization.
This position is based at icipe’s Duduville campus in Nairobi, Kenya and the successful candidate will report to the Head, Plant Health Theme.
