Fully Funded DATA4CHANGE Kenya Residential Workshop for CSOs & NGOs

A DATA4CHANGE flagship event is a five-day residential workshop with full immersion into the inner workings of a data visualisation studio.

CSOs and NGOs working on some of the world’s most pressing social and political problems are matched with carefully selected teams of industry experts covering the disciplines of data analysis, journalism, graphic design, and web development.

Nairobi Garage, Nairobi, Kenya

Since 2014, more than 200 people from over 40 countries have attended DATA4CHANGE flagship events in London, Beirut and Kampala.

We are excited to announce that applications are now open to attend our 2019 event, which will be held at Nairobi Garage.

Data4Change is very excited to have Code for Africa on board as the event partner.

For 2019 we’re doing things a bit differently and opening the call for applications for our civil society organisations (CSOs) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) first.

So if you’re looking to join as a creative, check back in early 2019 or keep an eye on our social media feeds to be the first to find out when the next round of applications opens.

It’s also the first time that we’re hosting a thematic DATA4CHANGE. All of this year’s projects will be about digital rights, internet freedom and/or freedom of expression online.

DATA4CHANGE is a proud member and implementing partner of UPROAR, a coalition of organisations working to raise the profile of digital rights in 21 countries.

DATA4CHANGE Nairobi 2019 supports the work of UPROAR.

If you work for a CSO or NGO covering any of these issues in at least one of the countries listed below, you’re eligible to apply.

Your work may cover other countries as well, but must include at least one of the target countries.

East Africa: Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda

Southern Africa: Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe

  • West Africa: Gambia, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone
  • Middle East and Central Asia: Afghanistan, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Sudan

At the end of the event each team has a proof of concept or fully rendered prototype for a data driven advocacy campaign, and the wealth of immeasurable experience that comes along with spending five days together with a diverse and uniquely talented group of individuals.

You’ll use data to tell stories and change hearts and minds, and you’ll make long lasting memories and life-changing friendships.

Suggested thematic areas include, but are no means limited to:

  • Censorship, shutdowns, obstacles to free access
  • Innovation, free and open source software
    Privacy, surveillance, encryption
  • Legislation and policy concerning the internet, press freedom, privacy, access
Governance of the internet, net neutrality
Protection and realisation of human rights online
  • If your organisation has an important story to tell about any of these issues in our target countries, click the button below to apply!

    Benefits
  • Full scholarship for you and a colleague to attend
the workshop, including travel, accommodation, and in-country costs
  • Experience working with talented industry professionals on a data driven project guided by you
  • Learn how to tell stories with data
Applications to attend DATA4CHANGE are reviewed by a board of advisers and the competition is very tough.
  • If you are accepted, you and a colleague will receive a full scholarship to attend the event.
  • Apply early and beat the crowd! During this phase we accept applications from interested civil society organisations.
  • On a rolling basis we make contact with each applicant to begin the process of creating our shortlist, so the earlier you apply, the earlier we can assess your eligibility.
  • As soon as you’ve applied, our team will begin reviewing your application.
  • If we decide to progress your application to Phase Two, we’ll be in contact to arrange a suitable time to interview you.

    Phase Two:
  • Interviews.

During the video interview we’ll talk about your proposed theme, and ask about your previous work.

  • We’ll want to ask you about the strategic priorities of your organisation and find out how the theme you’ve proposed fits in with them.
  • We’ll also take the time to describe in detail what you could expect from a DATA4CHANGE flagship event, and answer any questions you might have.
  • We like to know that your colleagues support the proposal and will rally around the outcome of the event, so we may ask you to identify a key decision-maker from your organisation that can join us for the interview too.

    Phase Three:
  • Data Dive.
  • If your organisation is one of the lucky four selected to attend, you’ll have hands-on support from DATA4CHANGE and Code for Africa to help you prepare your material for the event.
  • We’ll work with you to identify sources of data, clean any datasets you may already have and get them ready for the event, and prepare briefing documents for your team.
  • This is so you’ll have the best chance of a successful outcome during the event.
