DRC Livelihoods Assistant - Vocational skills trainer Jobs in Kenya


  • DRC began operating in Kenya in 2005 with assistance to refugees and displacement-affected communities via implementation of protection and livelihoods activities.

  • The Livelihoods Assistant (Vocational Skills Trainer-Tailoring & Home Decor) will ensure a high-quality direct delivery of vocational skills training among selected refugee and host community members on specific trades leading to Grade Test certification by the National Industrial Training Authority (a Government of Kenya agency).

  • This position works closely with the Livelihoods Officer and other team members to ensure an integrated approach in beneficiary training, assessments and beneficiary feedback.

  • This position is assigned to work within skills training components in areas of crafts, soft furnishing, home decoration, tailoring and dressmaking at vocational skills training centers within the refugee camps and in the host community.

    Responsibilities

    Project Administration and Operation

  • Working closely with the Livelihoods Officer or Assistant, and with technical advice from the Team Leader for Livelihoods, to develop, customize and deliver standardized curricula for Vocational Skills Courses offered (soft furnishing, home decoration, crafts, tailoring and dress-making) for learners in refugee camps and host community

  • Prepare course outlines in a timely fashion

  • Maintain daily class attendance registers

  • Design and prepare training aids, learning materials and information to be used in activity delivery

  • Carry out teaching and training activities based on best-practices

  • Make certain that course syllabi are well covered and completed in time

  • Participate in career guidance and counseling targeting learners

  • Take part in designing and procurement of learning materials

  • Provide market information, technical support that includes linking graduates of the program to employment opportunities

  • Equip learners with technical and other necessary market-place skills

  • Take responsibility for the quality of teaching delivered

  • Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs

  • Encourage the development of communication skills and higher order thinking skills through appropriate assignments to the students

  • Develop and explain methods that fairly measure student progress toward student learning outcomes

  • Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning

  • Coordinate the advertisement, interviews and selection of the students.

    Vocation Training Centre Support

  • Installing and management of operating equipment and fixtures

  • Providing support, including procedural documentation and relevant reports

  • Following diagrams and written instructions to repair faulty equipment

  • Conducting safety checks on training equipment

  • Supervise incentive (community) trainers in the various trades

    Liaison

  • Organize and coordinate related stakeholders’ meetings/workshops/forums to enable the active, free and meaningful participation of project beneficiaries in the design and implementation of project activities within the refugee camps and host community

  • Ensure and maintain mutual linkages with the relevant Sub-county offices especially with related line ministries to enhance their understanding of program needs in the assigned area of
    operation.

  • Promote collaboration and synergy between the DRC host community project and similar projects/groups in the Dadaab refugee camps

    Training/Meeting/ Forums

  • Prepare and conduct community sensitization forums/meetings with community leaders and beneficiaries in the refugee and host community

  • Document lessons learned from training activities, community meetings and assist in preparing training reports

  • Coach and mentor the incentive (community) trainers on core competency areas in teaching

  • Provide entrepreneurship and business skills training to learners

    Design, Monitoring and Evaluation Activities

  • Apply appropriate tools to be used for monitoring and reporting on learner progress

  • Participate in regular feedback sessions with the project team

  • Document success stories and project milestones as well as best practices

  • Carry out any other task as assigned by supervisor.

    Experience and Technical Competencies

  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant combined business and training experience

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in teaching youth at a Vocational Training Institute or Mid-level College setting

  • A strong self-starter and able to take initiative

  • Good planning and organizational skills coupled with problem-solving abilities

  • A hands-on community mobilizer

  • People management skills (worked with small teams ranging from 1-5 individuals)

  • Cultural sensitivity and respect for diversity

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish effective working relations with other stakeholders

  • Knowledge and understanding of Somali society; Experience in refugee settings and knowledge of refugee issues essential

    Education

  • Diploma in a relevant course area from a Government-accredited educational institution

  • Holds a recognized certificate in Technical Education

  • Language Spoken and written English & Swahili. Ability to speak the Somali language is an added advantage

  • External - Kenya Government (RAS), NITA, NGOs and INGOs working in the Dadaab Refugee Complex, refugee and host community leaders, beneficiaries (Refugees and Host communities)

  • Internal - DRC team members from various departments
