  • icipe is a pan-African and non-profit Centre of Excellence for research and development and capacity building in insect science and its applications.

  • Its mission is to help alleviate poverty, ensure food and nutritional security and improve the overall health status of peoples of the tropics by developing and extending management tools and strategies for harmful and useful arthropods, while preserving the natural resource base through research and capacity building.

  • Since its establishment in 1970, icipe has become a significant contributor to science and innovation required to meet the health and food security challenges of sub-Saharan Africa.

  • The Centre has achieved this status by developing alternative and environmentally friendly pest and vector management technologies and products that are effective, selective, non-polluting, non-resistance inducing, and are affordable to resource-limited rural and urban communities.

  • icipe is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya with offices in Ethiopia and Uganda, a major station on the shores of Lake Victoria, and several other field stations in Kenya.

  • Employing close to 500 international and national staff, icipe also has approximately 150 graduate students who contribute to its research portfolio annually.

  • The Centre currently has operations in more than 40 African countries, and thriving partnerships with universities and research organizations across the world.

    Job Description

  • The Director Strategy and Partnerships (DSP) is a senior position in the Management of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe).

  • S/he will be responsible for the overall strategy, effectiveness and efficiency of partnerships, and institutional development at the Centre.

  • S/he will report to the Director-General (DG) and will work closely with Senior Managers and other stakeholders to provide overall leadership and direction to the development and implementation of the Centre’s strategy, innovation, partnerships and institutional development.

  • S/he will lead in developing and embedding a safeguard framework throughout the Centre.

  • In addition, S/he will oversee the ICT, Regions, Stations and Guest Centres in their provision of proactive results-oriented services.

  • S/he will contribute to Centre-level initiatives based on icipe's strategy.

  • The position is located at icipe’s headquarters in Nairobi.

    Key Responsibilities

  • Develop plans and advise the senior management and Governing Council on the Centre’s overall strategy and specifically the management of partnerships, innovation and institutional development.

  • Work closely with the Director General on the development of aspects related to governance and contribute to the development of strategies and plans for the Centre.

  • In liaison with the Director General, Director of Research and Director of Finance, play a significant role in planning and implementation of initiatives geared towards the Centre’s operational excellence and sustainability including engagement in fund-raising in cooperation with Theme Leaders and Scientists.

  • Advance the Strategic Vision (2021-2025) and lead the
    regional operations and the strategic development of portfolio of projects in the western and southern Africa and the Centre’s positioning in the context of the fourth industrial revolution.

  • Work closely with the Themes, Research Support Units, BioInnovate Programme and the Regional Scholarship and Innovation Fund in developing partnerships, driving innovation and drive the RBM framework reporting and resultant learning.

  • Lead in risk-management across the Centre and development of internal capacities for financial sustainability, specifically the establishment and operation of an endowment fund.

  • Lead the development and implementation of safeguards across the Centre, working closely with related teams to ensure safeguarding is integrated into everything the Centre does.

  • Develop and implement strategies for ICT, Regions, Stations, and Guest Centres covering policies, staff resourcing, compensation, organizational development and training.

  • Manage the operations of the service teams (ICT, Guest Centres, Regions, Stations) by clarifying roles and objectives, organizing structures, designing jobs, coach and mentoring unit managers and managing their individual performance.

  • Expand, develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, represent the Centre at various meetings. Inform icipe’s partners and other stakeholders about the Centre’s strategic goals and core business.

  • Contribute to the development of policies and guidelines and provide advice on their impact on the Centre.

  • Undertake additional duties requested by supervisor for areas that require support within the Centre’s overall business.

    Interpersonal Interaction

  • This position reports directly to the Director General. On a daily basis, this position interacts with donors, partners and all senior levels of staff.


  • A relevant PhD. Analytical and administrative skills, including the ability to analyze and solveproblems efficiently and effectively.

  • Ten years of experience, five of which should be continuous and in a managerial position.Experience must include management at international development, research institutions or donor organizations.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills required, including ability to interact and communicate effectively with staff at all levels as well as colleagues; donors and funders, implementing partners, IGO,NGO, UN Agency personnel; and individuals with diversified backgrounds and nationalities.

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, meet deadlines, maintains a high degree of judgment

  • Well organized, attentive to detail and maintains a hands-on approach with excellent writing skills.
