  • icipe is a pan-African and non-profit Centre of Excellence for research and development and capacity building in insect science and its applications.

  • Its mission is to help alleviate poverty, ensure food and nutritional security and improve the overall health status of peoples of the tropics by developing and extending management tools and strategies for harmful and useful arthropods, while preserving the natural resource base through research and capacity building.

  • Since its establishment in 1970, icipe has become a significant contributor to science and innovation required to meet the health and food security challenges of sub-Saharan Africa.

  • The Centre has achieved this status by developing alternative and environmentally friendly pest and vector management technologies and products that are effective, selective, non-polluting, non-resistance inducing, and are affordable to resource-limited rural and urban communities.

  • icipe is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya with offices in Ethiopia and Uganda, a major station on the shores of Lake Victoria, and several other field stations in Kenya.

  • Employing close to 500 international and national staff, icipe also has approximately 150 graduate students who contribute to its research portfolio annually.

  • The Centre currently has operations in more than 40 African countries, and thriving partnerships with universities and research organizations across the world

    Job Description

  • The jobholder will be the corporate leader in data management and also responsible for providing statistical expertise to fellow research scientists, postgraduate students, partners and collaborators at all stages of research and development.

    Specific Duties

    The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Be the corporate leader in data management and work with scientists and staff to establish a vision and culturethat embraces data management and accountability as a cross-corporateasset.

  • Develop and align institutional data management policy with relevant regulatory, legal and ethical mandates.

  • Communicate data management standards to Centre staff.

  • Manage programmes that advance the roles of data management, data security and compliance with datamanagement policies.

  • Oversee the integrity, security, usage and availability of institutional data.

  • Work with scientists and IT personnel to ensure data standards are aligned with programme and project priorities.

  • Work with scientists to develop data standards and rules for managing and storing data.

  • Develop and maintain controls on data quality and interoperability to manage corporate risk.

  • Institutionalise behaviour for appropriate use of data information within changing privacy needs and norms.

  • Manage and control institutionalmaster-data,meta-data and reference data, and provide roadmaps for continuousimprovement in compliance to policy, standards and conceptual models.

  • Ensure appropriate audit controls exist for data that serves as source materials for institutional reporting.

  • Regularly review emerging data management tools, skills and technologies, and ensure timely introduction to theCentre.

  • Provide statistical consultation to researchers/scientists and students in the design of experiments and surveys,data collection, data
    management, analysis, interpretation, and reporting.

  • Undertake data analysis and relate the outcome of these to researchers in a comprehensive manner where necessary.

  • Ensure sound statistical practice by reviewing scientific reports, proposals and manuscripts for publication.

  • Maintain statistical software packages and provide trouble-shooting backups forusers.

  • Investigate and provide statistical expertise on new methods, tools, and approaches needed by icipe research staff.

  • Develop and facilitate in-house biostatistics training courses and use of R statistical software for scientists and students.

  • Participate in relevant icipe activities, such as scientific meetings.

  • Provide support to resource mobilisation and proposal development.

  • Supervise interns in the Biostatistics Unit.

  • Publish articles in peer-reviewed journals.

    Requirements/ Qualifications

  • PhD in computer science, data science, information science or related field.

  • Gravitas to develop a framework for data management and governance.

  • Experience integrating complex cross-corporate data management strategies.

  • Proven ability in data literacy – data sources and management concepts.

  • Familiarity with data generation and analysis methods in a complex operating environment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of data structure, information system/tools and related software for data management.

  • Broad experience in multiple areas, such as data governance,data warehousing,data architecture,data integration,data classification, data strategy, data quality management, data security, data standards, and corporate and regulatory compliance.

  • Proficiency in the use of R for data analysis is a must.

  • Experience in handling large databases.

  • Excellent planning and organisational skills.

  • Confident, effective communicator with excellent writing, editing, and verbal skills.

  • Ability to train and develop others.

  • Good track record of publication.

  • Five years’ experience in data management and IT is desired.

  • Five or more years’ experience working with cross-disciplinary teams within a complex context.

    Core Competencies

  • You will be required to highly contribute to increasing level of research design and implementation of the Centreguidelines.

  • You will be expected to carry out supervisory roles of support staff and post-graduate students.

  • Publication in peer-reviewed journal.

  • Youwill be expected to significantly contribute to preparation of at least two successfully funded proposals throughdemonstrated involvement in donor relations and/or building fund-raising coalitions with partners.

  • Distinct achievements through training, networking, research, and/or proposal development with partners, and atleast one publication with partner authorship.


  • This position reports to the Head of Data Management, Modelling & Geomatics Unit.

  • The selected candidate should be available to start as soon as possible.
