DAI seeks an Agricultural Promotion Director for the USAID Southern Africa Trade and Investment Hub (SATIH) project, a five-year trade facilitation project for Southern Africa. SATIH is expected to increase global competitiveness and intra-regional trade and improve food security in Southern Africa.



The Agricultural Promotion Director will advance enterprise, investment-led growth in the agriculture sector by facilitating strategic relationships and “transactional” deals between anchor firms and members of the supply chain.


Growth in the sector will be based on the expansion of intra-regional trade of agricultural commodities and trade with the US through utilization of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and other global partners.


Responsibilities:


  • The Agricultural Promotion Director will be responsible for strengthening enterprise-investment led agricultural supply chains; developing a pipeline of deals/transactions and aligning production with distribution systems – particularly in staple foods, horticultural products, value added processing and specialty foods for exports. The Director will focus on promoting financing and trading mechanisms, technology, commercial partnerships, and supporting sustainable market information systems to improve the competitiveness of targeted value chains.
  • The Director will oversee a team of specialists to advance enterprise, investment-led growth in the agriculture sector. The position will be based in Pretoria, South Africa with significant travel throughout the Southern Africa region. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Design and lead strategies with the private sector to improve market systems and commercial viability of key agricultural value chains.
  • Strengthen enterprise-investment led agricultural supply chains, develop a pipeline of private sector deals/transactions, and align production with
    distribution systems.
  • Facilitate private sector engagement and investment among various levels of target value chains including but not limited to producer, processor, wholesaler, and exporter levels with an emphasis on value addition to commodities and cash crops including management expertise, equipment upgrades, packaging, and investment.
  • Oversee technical assistance to improve the regional competitiveness of targeted value chains, including commercial partnerships, finance and investment, real time market information systems and ICT to increase trade, profitability and jobs in the agriculture sector.
  • Work with larger commercial anchor firms across Southern Africa to lead the development of the supply chain working with enterprises and producers.


    Required Qualifications:


  • Extensive experience and relationships with the agriculture private sector in strengthening enterprise, investment led agriculture value chains, developing a pipeline of deals/transactions; and aligning production with distribution systems;
  • At least 10 years of experience, preferably the SADC region, strengthening marketing systems and private sector investment led trade growth strategies focusing on intraregional and global trade;
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in enterprise led growth strategies, agricultural trade, enterprise development and investment and financing;
  • Demonstrated success using market systems approaches which led to greater competitiveness and inclusiveness in markets;
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills in English; and
  • Graduate degree in a relevant discipline, such as agribusiness, business, economics, or law is preferred; Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline is required.
