    Team Overview:

  • The first case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) in December 2019 and in January 2020, the WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) and subsequently in March 2020 as a pandemic.

  • To respond to COVID-19, South Africa’s National Department of Health (NDoH) set up an Incident Management Team (IMT) and partnered working nationally and provincially to coordinate the health response and provide stewardship and strategic guidance to ensure successful and sustained implementation.

    Position Overview:

  • CHAI seeks a highly entrepreneurial, energetic, results-oriented and self-motivated individual who is capable of taking initiative, multi-tasking and working independently to complete assigned tasks and projects. The Volunteer should be a fast learner who is excited about being part of a small but dynamic team of NGO professionals, and who wants to gain experience in the field of philanthropy while positively impacting the communities we serve.

  • The Volunteer will join a diverse team to support the Department of Health (DoH) create evidence based strategic plans and ensure that these plans are translated into strong operational plans and are implemented effectively. The Volunteer will be responsible for a wide variety of tasks, from developing and coordinating high-impact promotion partnerships to collaborating with stakeholders, including DoH and other partners, to building workable and sustainable solutions with the aim of strengthening the national COVID-19 response.

  • The Volunteer will support the team in its day to day operations, and strategic support, while remaining up to date on
    best practices in the field. There is an opportunity to learn and demonstrate mastery in both administrative and programmatic work, while also benefiting from various professional development and networking resources.

  • Successful candidates must have strong quantitative and analytical skills, excellent communications and writing skills, be able to function independently, be self-motivated, can thrive in challenging environments, be able to adapt to the differing needs of the program and have a strong commitment to excellence. The position is based in Pretoria, South Africa with some opportunity for both a flexible schedule and to work virtually from home. The Volunteer will report to the Program Manager for COVID-19, Community Based Activities and Communications.


    Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Support the development, execution and reporting of DoH’s Social Behavior Change Strategy through various communication channels including but not limited to activations, school outreach marketing, online advertising etc.

  • Data capturing and support in managing data collection databases, survey instruments and data collection protocols;

  • Support NDoH in all aspects of COVID-19 response strategy and planning and implementation, ensuring CHAI’s ongoing alignment with the DOH strategic goals and priorities;

  • Facilitate communication with various stakeholders— NDoH officials, Government partners, project collaborators and internal staff etc

  • Establish collaborative relationships with the DOH, partner organizations and other relevant stakeholders;

  • Represent the programme in meetings and workshops;

  • Support the Program Manager on key deliverables and ad-hoc requirements, as needed.


    Following are core competencies necessary for success as the COVID-19 Program Volunteer:

  • Passion for CHAI’s mission.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook; and internet/website use.

  • Excellent organizational and planning capabilities.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects within designated timelines while delivering high-quality results.

  • English language fluency, both written and verbal.

  • Degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field is advantageous.
