CIP Research Management Coordinator - Jobs in Bahir Dar - Amhara Ethiopia

The Position:

  • The International Potato Centre (CIP) under the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Management Coordinator who will lead and coordinate a project entitled “Improving smallholders’ nutrition and food security with biofortified sweetpotato in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia”. The project is implemented by the International Potato Centre (CIP) with funding from GIZ.


  • CIP is a non-profit international agricultural research-for-development organization with a focus on potato, sweetpotato and Andean roots and tubers. CIP is dedicated to achieving food security, improved well-being, and gender equity for poor people in root and tuber farming and food systems of the developing world.

  • CIP works with partners to contribute high quality science, technology, and capacity strengthening for sustainable science-based solutions. CIP is headquartered in Lima, Peru, with staff and activities in over 30 locations across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

  • CIP is a member of the CGIAR Consortium. CGIAR is a global agriculture research partnership for a food secure future. Its science is carried out by the 15 research centers that are members of the CGIAR Consortium in collaboration with hundreds of partner organizations.

    Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Facilitates the implementation of activities related to the expansion of the production of nutritious OFSP varieties, strengthening of rural and urban market demand, and improved utilization of OFSP among rural and urban consumers;

  • Supports institutional and policy support to nutrition-sensitive agriculture in Amhara region

  • Initiates and coordinates a campaign for the promotion of sweetpotato for improved nutrition and food security;

  • Develops and documents a behavioural-change strategy for new sweetpotato dishes and food products with emphasis on orange-fleshed sweet potatoes;

  • Identifies public and private actors and food processors for the large-scale use and distribution of innovative sweetpotato-based food products;

  • Ensures high quality implementation of project activities required for the achievement of project objectives;

  • Provides and arranges training of staff of public and
    private partner institutions;

  • In collaboration with partners, implements participatory agronomic research activities and ensures high quality implementation and documentation;

  • Manages and supervises permanent and short-term project staff assigned to the project;

  • Ensures timely procurement of supplies and services required for effective and efficient project implementation;

  • Ensures the utilization and disbursement of project finance strictly as per agreed budget procedures;

  • Drafts and submits technical and financial reports as per the required guidelines and schedule;

  • Contributes to the development of a Monitoring and Evaluation plans for the project, implements a baseline survey and subsequent follow-up studies, with particular emphasis on consumption and nutrition;

  • Documents and presents findings in peer-reviewed international journals;

  • Contributes to the development of new project ideas and proposals;

    Academic and professional qualifications:


  • MSc or PhD degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Agricultural Extension or related field


  • At least 10 years of relevant work experience for MSc holders and 3 years of relevant experience for PhD holders in a research for development context, post the respective degrees.

  • Project Management experience would be an additional advantage.

  • Sound knowledge of participatory research and field demonstration methods

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and conduct research and to interpret results through international journal publications

  • Ability to take decisive action when faced with problems

    Additional Skills:

  • In depth knowledge in a technical or specialized field

  • Understanding of theoretical concepts / principles and their context

  • Advanced written and oral communication skills in English.
