Background:

  • The Center for International Health, Education and Biosecurity (CIHEB)-Kenya is a local non-governmental organization collaborating with the Ministry of Health and County Health Management Teams to strengthen health systems for improved quality of health care in Kenya.

  • CIHEB-K is collaborating with the University of Maryland, Baltimore CIHEB-Kenya, with funding from Presidential Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to strengthen health systems for the provision of HIV prevention and treatment services, roll-out case-based surveillance systems and to support national COVID-19 vaccine preparedness and disease prevention.

    Purpose:

  • The Communications Specialist will support the National Vaccines and Immunization Program (NVIP) and Health Promotion Unit in developing and disseminating communication materials that will promote community engagement for increased uptake of COVID-19 vaccination.

  • This position will lead and manage the public relations, promotions and media in relation to COVID-19 vaccine messaging and in alignment with CIHEB-Kenya and MOH branding requirements.

    Primary Responsibilities

  • Support the Health Promotion Unit finalize and disseminate the National Communication Strategy for COVID-19 vaccination

  • Support the program in the implementation of Knowledge Attitude and Practice Surveys on COVID-19 vaccination.

  • Support NVIP’s Advocacy Communication and Social Mobilization (ACSM) Committee to achieve its objectives

  • Provide technical assistance to the county Health Promotion Units in community engagement for improved COVID-19 vaccination uptake.

  • Facilitate the development and dissemination of regular stream of communication materials, documenting TRACK program’s progress and achievements. These may include, but are not limited to: Stories from the field (success stories, case studies, Social media updates, Project briefs, Fact sheets, Photographs and Videos

  • Identify, in consultation with the rest of the TRACK program, the most appropriate channels (print, web, social media, others) to target each stakeholder group to support COVID-19 vaccination
    message dissemination.

  • Maintain and continuously expand the program’s contact database.

  • Contribute to, in close collaboration with the Program Director, the compilation and editing of material for TRACK program’s quarterly and annual report.

  • Build a collection
    of high-quality photographs on TRACK Program work in the relevant counties, taking photographs (where necessary).

  • Develop good working relationships with key media in all target countries and exploit synergies with communications staff from the TRACK consortium partners.

  • Coordinate the visualization, scripting and production of short videos on TRACK program’s work within the counties.

    Academic Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in communications, mass media, political science or related field.

  • The ideal candidate will have tertiary qualifications in communications, marketing or public relations from a recognised university.

  • At least five years of work experience and demonstrated success in a communications role that includes social media.

  • Substantial communications experience, covering public relations, promotions and media, including in an international context.

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, including the ability to write for a variety of audiences and communications mediums.

  • Personal flexibility for after-hours meetings, deadline demands, and travel.
