    Job Description

    In Cape Town last summer, the British Prime Minister made a new and distinctive offer for the UK to work alongside, invest in and partner with African nations to deliver more opportunities, more jobs and greater stability – both in the UK and across Sub-Saharan Africa.

    To deliver these new partnerships, HMG (Her Majesty's Government) is rebooting its ability to deliver creative communication campaigns across the continent, with the launch of the Africa Campaigns Hub – and we are looking for an ambitious, talented and motivated campaign planning assistant to join this new team.

    The Africa Campaigns Hub will be a team of 14 communications specialists split between London, Pretoria, Nairobi and Abuja, designing and delivering creative communications campaigns.

    This role will be based in the British High Commission in Pretoria, working closely with and complementing the existing HMG communicators network across Sub-Saharan Africa.

    The core team in Pretoria – with regional campaign support in Abuja and Nairobi – will bring specialist skills in campaign delivery, strategic communication, digital, insight, monitoring and evaluation to the network.

    Working directly to the Campaigns Manager, you will be supporting the Campaigns Hub in bringing these skills together to develop and deliver pan-African campaigns.

    You will be enthusiastic and proactive; have excellent organisational skills and a broad understanding of how media and digital channels can be used to reach and influence audiences; and be a team-player with a passion for developing your campaign planning skills.

    Roles and responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Africa Campaigns Hub colleagues in London, as well as the regional campaign heads in Abuja and Nairobi, to support the planning and delivery of strategic media and digital communications campaigns – informed by robust audience insight.
  • Act as the Campaign Hub’s liaison person with corporate services teams – including HR and finance – with oversight of the team’s budget.
  • Manage and maintain the team’s directory of third party stakeholder contacts – from academia, NGOs, think tanks, campaigners and social media influencers.
  • Work closely with policy colleagues in London and across the HMG Africa Network to maintain a grid of excellent stories for media and digital communications, to help plan future campaigning. Also, work closely with an Insight Manager to keep performance dashboards updated.

    Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience
  • At least one year’s professional work experience, preferably in media, communications or PR.
  • A broad understanding of media and digital channels, how they
    interact and work to reach target audiences.
  • Great interpersonal and communications skills combined with the confidence to deal with people at all levels.
  • Good writing skills – you can turn around clean, crisp copy in plain English to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent organisational and self-management skills to respond effectively to tight – and changing – deadlines and priorities;
  • Sound knowledge of MS Office and project management tools, preferably with experience of using budgeting tools.
  • The ability to learn quickly and work with a high degree of autonomy;
  • A positive “can-do” attitude that can see way through challenges.
