Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)
Main purpose of job:
The British Embassy in Bamako is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas.
The British Embassy is fairly new – established in 2015 – but with a strong aid portfolio and political interest in Mali.
The driver role will help ensure the Embassy platform performs to the highest level by ensuring efficient Embassy operations and high safety standards.
The jobholder will carry out daily driving duties and support the efficient functioning of the Embassy.
The successful applicant will be responsible for providing a safe, friendly and effective service to Embassy staff and official visitors when required.
This includes providing professional and safe driver services, and efficient messenger and administrative support.Driving Embassy officials to meetings, appointments and functions outside the Embassy, and providing transport for Embassy visitors. This will take place in both soft-skin and armoured vehicles.
Roles and responsibilities:
Distributing letters and invitations; carrying out errands, including paying bills and undertaking banking transactions on behalf of the Embassy.
Responsibility for vehicle care; undertaking daily vehicle cheeking of tyres, hydraulic (brake) fluid, engine oil, radiator and battery levels and verifying the rear and front lights including indicator and brake lights are in good working order.
Ensuring the Embassy vehicles are always clean, refuelled, and in good running condition and that regular maintenance schedules are followed.
Overseeing routine and urgent maintenance of vehicles.
Working with local garages to ensure proactive maintenance is completed in a timely and proper manner in order to ensure minimum down time of Embassy vehicles.
Maintaining a daily log of all journeys and ensuring that passengers complete the Vehicle Journey Log after their trip is over.
Reporting any vehicle accidents and/or malfunctions to the Embassy Transport Manager.
Further tasks as and when required in support of the Corporate Services team and wider Embassy as a whole.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience
A clean current ‘category C’ driving licence (which permits the holder to drive heavy vehicles)
Excellent driving skills with attention to safety
At least three years recent experience of driving in Mali
A good working knowledge of Bamako and its principal locations
Able to read and write basic English and French
Fluent in spoken English, French and Bambara
Good knowledge of basic car maintenance and mechanical principles
High level of personal integrity, honesty and discretion
Proven ability to concentrate and drive safely in heavy and hazardous driving conditions
Knowledge of local driving laws and traffic patterns
Good personal appearance, i.e. a change of uniforms is required at least twice a week

The British Embassy is a small but friendly and supportive working environment.
Colleagues regularly benefit from learning and development opportunities in Mali and there will be the opportunity to travel regionally for training.
Working hours are from 8:00am to 16:30 Monday to Thursday and 8:00 to 11:30 on Fridays.
A 37.5 hour week including lunch break. Annual leave is 24 days in addition to 14 public holidays annually.
Overtime is payable.
Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Bamako are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Mali employment law.
All applicants must be legally able to work in Mali with the correct visa, status, or work permit.
The successful candidate will be subject to reference checking and security clearance check
