Main purpose of the job

  • The female Project Assistant will work under the supervision of the Project Officers to support in strengthening the delivery of spotlight initiatives in Machinga through creative, innovative, and effective interventions to address key priorities on Violence Against Women (VAW), Sexual and Gender Based Violence and Harmful Cultural Practices (SGBV/HP) challenges AGYW are facing in their communities.

  • The Project Assistant will be responsible for providing sound leadership in all aspects of Gender and available social services in the community that are linked to client care and support. The role requires effective planning, implementation, and evaluation of activities linked to mentorship and safe spaces. Attributes in managing adolescent girls and young women will be critical in supporting mentors and mentees in the safe spaces in order to achieve the intended goals where AGYW are free from all forms of VAW and abuse and develop resilience and mechanism to deny, report and identify violence.

    Education

    ▪ A minimum of Diploma in Gender and Development, Public Health or Nursing and/or related fields.

    ▪ Technical capacity and understanding of SGBV, HP, fistula and, social dynamics gender related issues.

    Experience

    ▪ Minimum three years of experience in Community work, gender based violence and psychosocial support interventions.

    ▪ Demonstrated experience in gender activism, advocacy and health.

    Responsibilities

    Project management

    Represent the Project Officer/Manager if required in:

    ▪ Meetings with District Executive Committee (DEC) and Council.

    ▪ Meetings with DHMT and One stop centre staff on project matters.

    ▪ Meetings with DCTs and DGO and GTWG on efficient management of Spotlight Initiative and social welfare of women services in the district.

    Technical

    ▪ Oversee the routine activities of safe spaces and liaise with mentors on case referral of SGBVs to service providers and for psychosocial support.

    ▪ Supporting Safe space mentors in conducting weekly mentorship sessions.

    ▪ Supervising Focal points and mentors in promotion of rights on women and elimination of VAGW in the targeted communities and households.

    ▪ Supporting community engagement on prevention and elimination of SGBV through organization and coordination of meetings.

    ▪ Collecting data and reporting on clients being, violence reported and follow up the outcome of cases on SGBV and HP.

    ▪ Promoting rights of AGYW in targeted communities.

    Assessing for emerging vulnerability issues in the community that will inform necessary further actions.

    ▪ Coordinate and organize open and close days for mentorship session.

    ▪ Raise awareness of SGBV and elimination strategies in the targeted communities.

    ▪ Participate in the open days and national events at national or community.

    ▪ Participate in the Community of practice meetings at district level.

    ▪ Follow up cases with health, CVSU, Police, Courts and Social welfare to ensure maximum service for the SGBV/HP and fistula.

    ▪ Support the most vulnerable like people living with disabilities and albinism who are subjected to SGBV/HP or fistula.

    ▪ Support assessment of facilities for disability friendliness and promote the plight of the people with disabilities.

    Capacity Building and Elimination of VAWG

    ▪ Coordinate trainings of care givers and other volunteers on ending violence against women and girls.

    ▪ Coordinate training of mentors mentees, SGBV survivors on livelihood and business management.

    ▪ Coordinate trainings on psychosocial support, and link survivors to care including fistula.

    ▪ Support CVSU and relevant community structures in management of referral funds for SGBV.

    Monitoring and Learning

    ▪ Prepare monthly and quarterly reports on progress of the project.

    ▪ Organise community meetings and interface or dialogue sessions to monitor progress for the elimination of VAWG or SGBV.

    ▪ Document case studies for best practices and mishaps.

    ▪ Document and share lessons learnt, best practices and challenges.

    ▪ Collecting data and reporting on clients being served and other services.

    ▪ Monitor recruitments and attendance of mentees and mentors in safe spaces.

    ▪ Documenting gained change stories related to the project.

    Required Skills

  • Nursing, Project management, Project monitoring and evaluation (M&E), Training program planning, Project implementation.

    Required Education

  • Diploma, Associate's degree.
