Africa Educational Trust started an accelerated secondary education for girls in Laikipia North in line with its inclusive and equitable strategies in education with the key focus to offer them an opportunity to complete secondary education that would increase their chances of competing and attaining life-long opportunities within their social, economical and political space.
The model had been crafted around key strategies for an accelerated curriculum including a close collaboration with the ministry of education to advise on quality of the accelerated curriculum, teacher training to align their practice with the collapsed curriculum, consistent community engagement for ownership and contribution to the model, enhanced monitoring with curriculum support officers for fidelity of implementation and to create the grounding of learning and adoption and an established pastoral care for the girls with the centre management to create a balancing lever between family responsibility and learning while at school and to ensure all the girls are retained
To ensure that we remained focus in supporting the girls to realize their dreams, we strengthened a language component which is key in conceptual development across all subjects and a reading program that targeted individualized reading skills. This was crafted and implemented for the last 2 years. Through such an initiative, the learners who could not read with understanding were reduced and this supported teachers to hasten the curriculum coverage. The girls’ self-study was promoted, and teachers got a chance to leverage home assignments expanding opportunities the of supporting girls outside classroom.
We are currently on our last months to the National Examination and our focus has shifted to strategies that would enable the learners to attain their best learning achievements and to enable them to grasp opportunities post KCSE including transitioning to tertiary education or engagement with other technical skills that would give them an equal chance to compete in the job market just like learners in the mainstream system.
To ensure that we address gaps on exam preparation at both teachers and learners’ level, we wish to have training that aligns teaching to the KNEC principles of setting exams and how learners are expected to prepare for the National Examinations.
AET intends to engage a consultant who will deliver a 2 day training with an objective of achieving the following outcomes;
Teachers develop skills on supporting learners to study the KCSE timetable and prepare adequately for each test with the limitation of timing within the KCSE period
Teachers conform their revision skills on syllabus coverage so that they remain within the bounds of examinable areas and to ensure the instructions are targeted and specific to areas where learners are struggling
Teachers develop skills on peer teaching and engage learners to support each other at group work level with a key focus on enhancing peer learning at group level when learners are engaged in group work and when they are doing revision for exams
Teachers are guided on KCSE exam setting skills, focusing on key areas where exams are set that would enable teachers to use past KCSE papers as revision tools for areas where learners are experiencing conceptual difficulties
Teachers have a clear strategy on guiding learners on how to manage burnout during the KCSE period and to facilitate learners in giving equal attention to all subjects
Teachers can support learners to attain a continous focus for the duration of the KCSE period until its completion and ensure they collaborate with their peers and teachers during the exam period especially on areas where they need guidance and support
Develop and deliver a 2-day training that focuses on strategies that prepares teachers and learners with pre-requisite skills for KCSE examinations.
Advise on the best approach to monitor and support teachers and learners pre and during KCSE examinations
Provide an detailed report of
the training highlighting key follow up points and recommendations for further support. (To be provided within 5 days of completion of training)
Proven track record of teaching in secondary education. Having worked as an administrator in secondary education is an added advantage.
Have a track record of experience teaching English, Kiswahili or Mathematics within the Kenyan context
Well versed with KNEC techniques and approaches of setting National Examinations with an added advantage of having worked with KNEC as a national examiner.
Proven track record of guiding learners and teachers on how they can integrate time limitations with the KCSE timetable with a focus to have learners supported during exams period.
Academic qualifications: should be a graduate in teaching from a recognized institution of higher learning with proven track record of experience. Masters qualification will be an added advantage.
At least 5 years of professional experience in conducting KNEC exams preparation training.
Extensive conceptual and practical knowledge on language or sciences in education
Demonstrated ability of reporting on training work.
Excellent communication skills in Kiswahili and English - both written and verbal
The consultant will come with a technical proposal indicating the number of days (3 days maximum) for the consultancy work with a realistic action plan. The date and the time frame for executing the work will be jointly agreed between the consultant and AET
Supervision and Management
The overall supervision of the consultant will rest with AET, the contracting agency. The consultant will report to the Field coordinator (or a designated manager). The AET Field Coordinator, based in Doldol will provide day-to-day supervision and support to the consultant.
Terms and Conditions
Logistics: The consultant’s travel from base to the field and back after the end of the contract, food, and accommodation will be covered by AET.
Professional fee: The consultants propose their own rate as part of the financial proposal.
Tax and insurance: The consultant shall be responsible for his/her income tax and/or insurance during the assignment. However, the minimum statutory requirement of 5% withholding tax shall be applied by AET for compliance.
Code of conduct & safeguarding: Based on AET’s code of conduct, which all staff members must adhere to, the consultant is bound by the principles and conditions of this code of conduct. The consultant is also expected to comply with AET’s standards of safeguarding for children and vulnerable adults
A contract will be signed between AET and the consultant before commencement of the work which will detail additional terms and conditions of service, aspects on inputs and deliverables
Expressions of interest should include:
Technical proposal maximum 3 pages highlighting a brief explanation about the consultant with particular emphasis on previous experience in this kind of work, profile of the consultant, understanding of the TOR, the task accomplished as well as a draft work plan
Financial proposal: the financial proposal should provide cost estimates for services to be rendered including daily consultancy fees but excluding accommodation and living costs; transport cost; stationeries and supplies needed for data collection
Copy of CV, testimonials and at least two copies of reports of similar work undertaken elsewhere
