Job Description

  • The Portfolio Manager is responsible for managing the entire portfolio of projects within the business unit throughout the entire business development lifecycle, whilst ensuring compliance to change management methodologies and the integrated landscape by monitoring and reporting on project governance, control, allocation of financial resourcing and capacity.

    Key Responsibilities

  • For the portfolio under management identify and leverage synergies between the various strategic initiatives planned and provide guidance to business engagement colleagues on how to ensure integration without creating complexity for business.

  • Establishment of governance and structure to drive large scale strategic or cross functional / BU initiatives through effective programme/project management.

  • Support portfolio pipeline management and alignment of portfolios to strategy to ensure that Everyday Banking is prioritizing the ‘right’ projects

  • Work with sector project offices and analyse and make recommendations to BU change councils and group change council on portfolio prioritization

  • Generate and co-ordinate the inputs to support BU and Group change councils decision-making including portfolio prioritisation criteria, processes, templates, benefits, resource Portfolio Managers to drive conformance and value adding governance.

  • Implement standards for Business Case documentation and process for gaining approval, incremental funding/resources.

  • Capture and collate cost, resource, and benefit data/realisation for the portfolio.

  • Engage with Finance and Everyday Banking Change to implement and maintain the funding pool allocation and tracking process.

  • Monitor and control the use of resources and funds against the original budget or, where appropriate, the latest allocation. Gain agreement from project sponsor and/or the steering committee for all changes to the project as necessary.

  • Understand the sectors and the BUs’ strategies and medium term plans in order to plan for the initiative spend for the upcoming year.

  • Provide a financial review and QA (quality Assurance) of all
    Sector/BU Business Cases : As required, actively promote the collaborative engagement of internal and external stakeholders of suppliers, projects

  • Build strong relationships with both global and local internal and external stakeholders · Ensure impeccable and timeous service levels.

  • Liaise with various Business Unit Heads within Everyday Banking and other in the Absa Group.

  • Liaise with key enablement partners throughout the Group (i.e. Sourcing, Africa Technology, etc.) to ensure effective demand, capacity and capability management for the successful execution of the everyday Banking Change Portfolio.

  • Line Management for a team of Programme / Project Managers, managing performance, PD, and career management as well as reviewing the quality of their work :

  • Manage staff performance

  • Manage staff career development

    Education and Experience Required

  • B degree or equivalent NQF level 7 qualification
    Completed courses such as Project Manager Professional (PMP), Prince2, PMBOK

  • A postgraduate degree such as MBA would be advantageous

  • Three (3) years Banking or Financial Institution experience

  • Five (5) years project management experience

  • Five (5) years solid knowledge of project management methodologies

  • Three (3) years project management experience gained in complex business environments Preferred


  • Bachelor`s Degrees and Advanced Diplomas: Business, Commerce and Management Studies (Required)
