The African development Bank (AfDB) is a leading development institution in the continent, focused on promoting economic development and poverty reduction.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Manager, Compliance and Safeguards, will work under the general supervision of the Vice President, ORVP and under the guidance of the Director, Results and Quality Assurance Department.

His/her core responsibilities will include the following:

  • Division management and supervision: plan, organize and coordinate the activities of the Division;
  • Mainstreaming environmental and social issues in Bank operations: liaise with sector and regional departments in addressing environmental and social safeguards issues;
  • Safeguards policy development / update: plan, coordinate and lead the preparation, revision/updating of key Bank environmental and social safeguard policies and procedures, including the Bank Environmental and Social Assessment Procedures (ESAP);
  • Compliance and categorization of operations: oversee environment categorization routinely executed by the Division and liaise with operations on issues of categorization;
  • Knowledge development and networking: establish and oversee the in-house network of environmentalist as a platform for consultation and knowledge development;

    Selection Criteria:

    Including desirable skills, knowledge and experience

  • Minimum of a Master’s Degree or its university equivalent in Environmental, Engineering or Social Sciences, or related disciplines.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of relevant work experience in quality assurance, safeguards policy development, and field operations.
  • Knowledge and practice of business processes of multilateral development institutions.
  • Excellent technical and analytical skills and established track record of excellence in operational and policy work.
  • Strong sense of leadership combined with proven teamwork skills; ability to build and lead a team of professional staff, and utilise talent and expertise of team members in a productive way.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and/or French, with a good working-knowledge of the other language.
  • High degree of discretion, tact and sensitivity in dealing with internal and external clients and stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment and build effective working relations with clients and colleagues.
  • Competence in the use of Bank standard software (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint)
