Program Summary

Winrock International (WI) is currently recruiting for a consultant to provide short-term technical assistance to the five-year, USAID-funded Feed the Future Ghana Agriculture and Natural Resources Management Project (USAID AgNRM).

The USAID AgNRM project seeks to provide a scalable, integrated landscape approach that will support sustainable economic development and rural livelihoods, increase nutrition and climate change adaptation, and strengthen Northern Ghana’s natural resources.

A key aspect to sustainable development in the project area is to understand and integrate sustainable water use in communities.

The sustainable management of water resources for productive and household use and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) activities are both integral to ensuring better nutrition and food security in communities in the project area. Additionally, these activities support and incentivize positive water and natural resource management.

AgNRM is in search of an expert with experience in the above, as well as understands time-saving strategies for women in water management and concepts of protecting water sources and water quality and quantity in the three regions in northern Ghana..

Essential Responsibilities:

The Sustainable Water Management Consultant will work closely with project staff based in the United States and Tamale. The consultant’s location will need to be in Tamale with travel to field site locations to conduct aspects of the required work.

Using existing project materials and working with project staff, the consultant will design and integrate water activities into the current project components: increased incomes from natural resource products, improved food and nutritional security, increased farmer and community security/access to land and natural resources, and strengthened

environmental stewardship. The project is in its first year of implementation.

The consultant will lead and integrate Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) and Multiple-Use Water Services (MUS) project activities into the above efforts, and will work closely with the AgNRM COP, DCOP and NRM/MUS Manager as well as partner organization staff in designing and integrating identified water activities into the larger project.

Specifically:

Design and work with project staff to integrate project WASH and MUS activities that increase water availability for domestic and agricultural purposes while conserving and protecting the natural resource base with other project activities.

Ensure activities support water related project indicators.

Review and provide suggestions into the project’s current participatory, community-based, approach to landscape-level watershed management.

Begin the implementation of project site level WASH/MUS project activities. This will require local travel.

Produce a final report outlining the identified activities, their linkages to the larger project and how they satisfy the project indicators related to water activities.

The technical recommendations made in the final report will need to be project site specific, for example:
assessment of status of current bore holes and augmentation or maintenance recommendations,
quantity, design and placement of rainwater harvesting units for each community,
identification of additional water sources.

Qualifications & Background:

Advanced degree in hydrology, natural resource management, environmental management, or related field.

Minimum five years of professional experience in building relations with rural communities through the extension of technologies, participatory planning, training and monitoring.

Strong skills in technical knowledge of NRM, small-scale irrigation technologies, household gardens and water use systems in northern Ghana.

Demonstrated experience in sustainable water management, preferably in northern Ghana.

In-depth understanding of design and/or analysis of watershed management desirable.

Experience working with local and international NGOs in northern Ghana is a plus.

Fluency in English is required.
