United Nations Human Settlements Programme Intern - Programme Management Jobs in Kenya


Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the World Urban Forum 9 Project Leader, the intern will:

  • Assist the WUF Secretariat team in a variety of activities related to the World Urban Forum 9 preparation
  • Support effective and continued communication with UN Habitat partners and prospective WUF attendees
  • Support outreach activities to mobilize national and local governments and other stakeholders towards the WUF9
  • Assist in follow up with focal points and substantive event organizers on finalization of concept notes and summary briefs among others;
  • Support compilation of information for the website;
  • Support interdepartmental engagement activities
  • Assist research and data collection on urbanization trends and progress on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda
  • Backstop note taking/preparation of minutes of meetings on WUF as well as templates and questionnaires ;
  • Draft short memoranda and concept notes on topics designated by the WUF Coordinator;
  • Support the coordinator in managing responses to inquiries arising from meetings and correspondence with Partners, members of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to UN-Habitat (CPR) and UN-Habitat staff;

    Education

    Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Preferred area of study: Studies in Social Sciences, Management, International Relations, Law or Urban Planning.

    Work Experience

  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.

    United Nations Human Settlements Programme Senior Technical Adviser Jobs in Kenya

    Responsibilities

  • Providing technical advice on National Urban Policies and National Spatial Plans by undertaking policy analysis, developing tools and guides, responding to country demand for advisory services and developing project proposals.
  • Advising on the development and implementation of National Urban Policies and National Spatial Plans by preparing concept notes, presentations and speeches, and advising on internal capacity development in coordination with other UN-Habitat thematic branches and offices.
  • Guiding the implementation of the National Urban Policy Programme (NUPP) by, inter alia, creating and sharing knowledge on National Urban Policy, implementing capacity development programmes on National Urban Policy in selected countries, and developing international advocacy strategy to promote and implement the NUPP.
  • Performing any other relevant duties as may be assigned.

    Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in urban/regional planning, public administration, urban policy or any other subject that is
    relevant for sustainable urban development.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

    Work Experience

  • A minimum of 10 years progressively relevant experience in the field of urban/regional planning, urban policy, urban infrastructure, urban transport, urban basic services or any other field that is relevant to sustainable urban development.
  • Experience of at least 5 years within a Ministry responsible for Human Settlements and Urban Development is an important asset. Previous UN experience is an advantage.
  • Exposure to work in developing countries is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For this position fluency in written and oral English is required.
  • Working knowledge of another United Nations official language will be an asset.

    United Nations Human Settlements Programme Management Officer Jobs in Kenya

    Responsibilities

    •Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of the public space programme/ projects; monitor and analyze programme/project development and implementation; review relevant documents and reports;
    •Perform assignments in planning and facilitating participatory design workshops and assisting in developing the action plan for the management of the project.
    •Research, analyze and present information gathered from diverse sources.
    •Assist in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends with the IT and public space arena, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies.
    •Undertake survey initiatives; design data collection tools; review, analyze and interpret responses, identify problems/issues and prepare conclusions.
    •Prepare various written outputs, such as, draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, among others.

    Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in architecture, programme/project management, social sciences or a related area, is required.
  • A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

    Work Experience

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area, is required.
  • Proven working knowledge and experience in participatory design tools such as minecraft as well as experience in handling big data, crowd sourcing and other similar platforms, is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and oral English is required.
  • Working knowledge of the French language is desirable.
  • Knowledge of other UN official languages is an advantage.

    Assessment

  • Evaluation of qualified applicants may include an assessment exercise, most notably a competency-based interview.
