United Nations Finance and Budget Officer, P3 Career Opportunities in Kenya

Responsibilities

• Monitors and records extra-budgetary contributions to Science Division;
• Reviews and analyses data with respect to the finalization of cost estimates and budget proposals
• Provides support to managers with respect to the elaboration of resource requirements for budget submissions;
• Issues requests for redeployment of funds when necessary, ensuring appropriate expenditures;
• Monitors Science Division’s budget implementation and determines/recommends reallocation of funds when necessary;
• Monitors Science Division’s expenditures to ensure that they remain within authorized levels;
• Analyses Science Division’s expenditure data for trends and adherence to the Programme of
Work;

Education

• Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in accounting, business administration, finance, project management, or related fields is required.
• A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

• A minimum of five (5) years progressively responsible experience in accounting, finance, administration, budget, business administration or related area is required.
• Experience in budget development, management of public funding, project management, grant management or the financial administration of resources at the international level is required. • Experience in the application of Results Based Budgeting or similar performance management methodologies is desirable.
• Working experience working with Accounting Module Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is an advantage.

United Nations Senior Interpreter, Chinese, P5 Career Opportunities in Kenya

Posting Period: 15 June 2017 - 29 July 2017

Responsibilities

• Service up to seven meetings per week (exceptionally eight) of various United Nations bodies;
• Provide interpretation into Chinese of speeches given in English or French, and interpretation into English or French of speeches given in Chinese;
• May occasionally be assigned to sensitive meetings;
• May function as Team Leader of all interpreters assigned to a given meeting;
• Assist the Chief of Section, or Service, as appropriate, in the screening, training and examining of prospective interpreters;
• May be designated as Officer-in-Charge of the Interpretation Section; Perform as Programming Officer, whenever necessary;
• Instruct and advise trainee interpreter;

Education

• Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Interpretation or related fields is required.
• A first-level university degree in combination with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
• Candidates MUST have passed the official United Nations Competitive Examination for Interpreters.

Work Experience

• A minimum of ten years of professional interpreting experience in international organizations, five of which would be within the UN System.
• Relevant language experience within the UN System may be taken into consideration in meeting the requirements of this post.

United Nations Legal Officer, P4 Career Opportunities in Kenya

Responsibilities

• Serves as a lead officer in one or more areas of concentration, and independently handles a wide range of multi-discipline.
• Provides legal advice on diverse substantive and procedural questions of considerable complexity to the Director-General
• Prepares legal submissions/motions and gives assistance as necessary in
the course of investigations and prosecutions.
• Services diplomatic conferences, commissions, committees, task forces, expert groups and other bodies
• Reviews, advises on and drafts complex contracts, agreements, institutional and operational modalities
• Provides legal advice on the interpretation and application of staff regulations and rules, including the review of administrative decisions;

Education

• Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent), in international law or a related field.
• A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advance university degree.

Work Experience

• A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible professional experience in legal matters, including at least five years of international experience is an advantage.
• Experience in labour law and typical legal issues in the context of employment relations would be an advantage.

United Nations Director, Science Division, D2 Career Opportunities in Kenya

Responsibilities

• Within the delegated authority, the Director, Science Division, will be responsible for the following:
• Formulate and implement the substantive work programme of the Division, determine priorities, and allocate resources for the completion of outputs/results
• Oversee the management of activities undertaken by the Division as a contribution to the UN Environment Programme of Work, including preparation, execution and monitoring of budgets, assigning and monitoring of performance parameters and critical indicators and other administrative tasks;
• Ensure that programmed activities are carried out in a timely fashion and co-ordinate work in the different areas both within the Division and other UN Environment divisions and offices;
• Co-ordinate and oversee the preparation of reports for presentation to donors, United Nations intergovernmental bodies as appropriate;
• Manage, guide, develop, encourage and train staff under his/her supervision; foster teamwork and communication among staff in the Division and across the organizational boundaries;

Education

• Advanced University Degree (Masters Degree or equivalent degree) in natural sciences, social sciences, environmental management, business administration, management, finance, law, economics or other related area is required.
• A first-level degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in the specified fields with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

• More than fifteen (15) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of science, environment, geography and development, human resources management, business or financial in multicultural institutions as well as programme and project planning and analyses, budgeting, or related area is required.
• Experience in a management and leadership position in an international organization is required.
• Experience in the area of the science/policy interface is desirable.
