Society Initiative Consultant, Digital Rights and Access to Information (Democracy and Governance Cluster) Vacancies in South Africa


Programme Initiation:

  • Actively identifies opportunities within the programme that are aligned to the OSISA strategy, and provides intellectual leadership in strategy and work plan development and review.

    Programme Implementation:

  • Ensures the implementation of the programme work plan and importantly the integration of the programme within the Cluster and across the organisation.
  • Ensures joint and collaborative work with other programmes to ensure maximum impact from OSISA grants and projects.
  • Works with the Grants Unit to identify and manage pre and post award compliance issues as well as reporting requirements.
  • Responsible for assisting the Team Leader with due diligence, monitoring of the programme budget, management and tracking grants within the Media, Digital Rights and Access to Information Programme.

    Communication and Advocacy:

  • Identifies key opportunities for the promotion of the Media, Digital Rights and Access to Information strategic priorities as part of the Democracy and Governance’s theory of change and OSISA ideals.
  • Reporting to the Cluster Team Leader and working closely with relevant Open Society Foundation programmes, develops advocacy initiatives related to the Media, Digital Rights and Access to Information at regional and national level.
    Key Competencies

  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English. Proficiency in French and/or Portuguese is a definite plus
    Excellent attention to detail
  • Capacity to work in multi-cultural and multinational contexts
  • Grant management experience and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work under pressure with composure
  • Good planning and organisational skills
    Willingness to travel

    Qualifications and Experience

  • A Master’s Degree in Law, Social Sciences, Development, Media Studies, Journalism or any related field.
  • At least five years’ experience in a programme or project management position in a bilateral, multilateral, civil society, regional organisation setting.
  • A working knowledge of and demonstrable familiarity with relevant discourses and the media situation in Southern Africa is a distinct advantage.
