We are looking for a Social Behavior Change Communications Advisor for Tusan Wade, a Demand Creation project in Somalia designed to achieve increased community awareness of, and demand for, health services and promote appropriate health, Maternal Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) as well as optimal hygiene practices.

Tusan Wade is a critical component of the Somali Health and Nutrition Program (SHINE) funded through DFID to compliment supply interventions to respond to the unique health and nutrition challenges in Somalia.

The SBCC advisor will be overall in charge of deliverables under this dynamic project and also drive the learning agenda throughout the life of project.

Your contribution
PSI seeks an entrepreneurial, dynamic candidate with significant technical expertise in social and behavior change communications in the health field.

The SBCC advisor will be responsible for coordinating formative research activities and prototyping demand creation interventions. The SBCC advisor will also provide overall technical oversight of implementing partners under this project.

  • Provide strategic, technical guidance and direction to the Project in collaboration ensuring alignment with latest technical information, evidence and approaches in the SBCC field.
  • Design high quality project interventions and assessments in collaboration with relevant project partners.
  • Travel to project implementation areas to provide on-site technical assistance to the design and implementation of project activities, including with national and international partners.
  • Build local capacity of selected entities (MOH and implementing partners) in design, implementation and evaluation of SBCC programming.
  • Work with other consortium management unit staff to coordinate reporting to the donor and representation of the project externally at events, conferences and meetings.
  • Drive the learning agenda of the project

    What we are looking for
  • At least 15 years of demonstrated experience in designing and implementing communication or marketing activities, preferably in conflict/ post conflict regions/ areas
  • Willingness to travel in the field
  • Demonstrated success in generating innovative and effective behavior change or marketing solutions
  • At least 5 years working in developing countries settings
  • A Masters degree in communications, marketing, or similar, or a bachelors degree with at least 5 years of additional relevant experience.
  • Professional fluency in French.
  • Experience building capacity of civil society and/or government entities in social and behavior change communications.
  • Creativity and entrepreneurial outlook.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

    Human-Centered Design Consultant

    We are looking for a Human-Centered Design (HCD) expert to help drive forward the prototyping phase of Tusan Wade, a Demand Creation project program designed to achieve increased community awareness of, and demand for, health services and promote appropriate health, Maternal Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) as well as optimal hygiene practices.

    Demand creation is critical to compliment supply interventions to respond to the unique health and nutrition challenges in Somalia.

    Through the inception phase of this program, HCD will be used to develop innovative demand creation interventions to increase demand for health services and promote healthy behaviors.

    The HCD Consultant will be responsible for driving the prototyping process (demand creation interventions) and training the PSI Somaliland team through both formal theories and practical application.

    The HCD consultant will be responsible for design research and synthesis and start the early-stage prototyping process. The consultant will be responsible for leading the team through the prototype phase, resulting in fully-formed demand creation interventions for priority health areas ready for piloting by December 2016.

    Your contribution
    You will be responsible for the development of human-centered design skills, team development and preparing our demand creation prototypes for pilot stage.

    You will work with the Social Behavior Change Communications Advisor and PSI Somaliland research team to push forward the prototyping process, with the goal of having an intervention ready for piloting by December 2016. This is a six month consultancy.

    Build Innovation Team Capacity
  • Train PSI Somaliland team on HCD through formal training and concepts
  • Develop and build team's capacity in design research and in identifying and articulating insights as compared to observations, facts and data
  • Lead PSI Somaliland team through hands-on practice implementing HCD through prototyping
  • Promote creativity and open ideas through team assignments, team makeup and other relevant team building and development strategies
  • Onboard and train new research team members and other relevant PSI staff
  • Lead Tusan Wade Prototyping development to prepare for pilot/ testing
  • Ground design work in background literature and formative research from project inception phase
  • Manage the creative design process of Tusan Wade prototype ideas including the study design and deliverables
  • Implement flexible program monitoring and evaluation systems appropriate for the level of prototype
  • Help prepare internal, regional and donor sharing documents and reports on the program's process

    Develop pool of local “makers”
  • Identify local craftspeople and creative talent to create a pool of makers that can be called on when needed
  • Basic initiation/training of local makers on the HCD process, priming them for the teams' work flow and process

    Learning and knowledge management
  • Co-develop and co-lead visits from key internal and external stakeholders
  • Co-facilitate the learning process and HCD process
  • Build participants understanding of and skills in HCD

    The basics
  • You have a bachelors degree in design, public health, business development, social sciences or relevant field
  • You have at least four years of experience in human-centered design
  • You have passion and experience in building local skills and team development
  • You have worked using an HCD approach in the developing world
  • You have experience working in public health, NGOs and/or the social sector
  • You have led teams of other designers and (ideally) non-designers in a human centered design process
