Joy as schools in Mombasa escape exam irregularities claim

Teachers, parents and candidates in two Mombasa schools, where cases of irregularities were reported during the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams, were on Wednesday overjoyed when Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i announced that the county was not among those involved in cheating.

The Nation found groups of parents jumping and dancing with joy in one of the schools’ compound when they visited.

“Thank you God! What we feared most was cancellation,” a parent was overheard saying at Star of the Sea Primary School.

“Parents have been streaming in to check their children’s performance, but we have asked them to come in the evening. All eyes were on this school after what happened but God is great! We were very scared,” said one of the teachers.

Twelve teachers from the school were charged before a Mombasa court with being in possession of KCPE examination materials.

They denied the charges and were each released on a Sh500,000 bond with a surety of similar amount or an alternative of a Sh200,000 cash bail.

They are Ms Zillah Wacharo, Ms Edda Wakio, Ms Margaret Dzombo, Ms Agatha Wafula, Mr Newton Mwalamisi, Ms Mary Kavehere, Ms Beth Wangui, Pili Omar, Ms Janet Nuru, Ms Asli Ibrahim, Ms Edith Mutambi and Ms Beatrice Kedogo there cases is still ongoing. - Daily Nation, Thursday, 31st December 2015
