1. ILRI Technical Advisor Job in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia


The Position:


The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT; www.ciat.cgiar.org) seeks to recruit a Technical Advisor, to be based at its Ethiopia Country Office in Addis Ababa located at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) campus.

General:

CIAT is one of the 15 non-profit centers that are members of the CGIAR Consortium. This global research partnership operates primarily through CGIAR Research Programs, CRPs, which are designed to deliver tangible benefits for the rural poor on a large scale. Within this framework, CIAT participates actively in the CGIAR Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE) Research Program, to which the ”technical Advisor” position is connected (www.pim.cgiar.org).

Main Responsibilities:

The candidate will have interdisciplinary skills that will enable her/him work closely with colleagues in social, biological and physical sciences. She/he should also be equipped with modelling tools for integrating socio-economic and ecological variables. Some of the research/development areas the researcher is expected to contribute include:

  • Conduct integrated socio-ecological modelling to identify best-fit technologies that promote agricultural system transition to productive and eco-efficient state;
  • Map and quantity the multiple functions and service supply of landscapes to develop sustainable restoration and management options;
  • Design and implement integrated water resources development and management practices to enhance soil moisture and promote small-scale irrigation;
  • Identify best-bet site- and context-specific soil management options to enhance soil health, improve productivity while reducing agriculture’s impact on ecosystems;
  • Identify and evaluate socio-economic, biophysical, policy, institutional drivers/enabling factors needed for sustainable implementation and adoptions of land-soil-water management options;
  • Develop tools and suitable indicators to assess landscape ecosystem health and evaluate the eco-efficiency and sustainability of management interventions including tradeoffs and synergies;
  • Contribute towards understanding interactions and feedbacks of processes at plot-farm-landscape levels (including material flows) and devise approaches for integrated analysis following systems approach;
  • Establish and enhance partnership across the region and globally to promote CIAT’s activities;
  • Participate in fund raising activities in collaboration with CIAT colleagues and other partners;
  • Supervise PhD and MSc students as well as interns associated with CIAT and partners;
  • Publish quality products in appropriate avenues.

    Minimum Requirements:

    Education:


    PhD in landscape ecology, soil and water conservation, hydrology, system agronomy, or related fields, focusing on integrated watershed management at different scales.

    Experience:

  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience

    Skill and Competence:

  • Experience in teamwork and people management skills in a multicultural environment;
  • Excellent communications skills including verbal, written English and presentation skills;
  • Excellent inter-personal skills, leadership skills and a proven networker;
  • Knowledge and competence in statistical data analysis and modelling;
  • Adequate knowledge and skills and GIS, remote sensing and spatial data analysis;
  • Basic skills in programming are desirable.

    Position level: 4A

    Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

    Minimum Base salary:

    Birr 50,330 per month (Negotiable depending on experience, skill and salary history of the candidate)

    Initial appointment is for two years renewable appointment based on performance and funding availability.     2. IFPRI Communications Officer Jobs in Ethiopia

    The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks to hire a Communications Officer for its Land Policy Initiative (LPI) – IFPRI project in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

    IFPRI is one of the international agricultural research institutes organized under the CGIAR Consortium. The mandate of IFPRI is to identify and analyze alternative national and international strategies and policies for meeting world food needs in ways that conserve the natural resource base, with emphasis on low income and on the poorer groups in the countries.     Main Responsibilities:

  • Ensure smooth flow of information and communication among all stakeholders of the project (The UN-ECA/LPI, IFPRI, national partners, country coordinators and other partners);
  • Support the preparation of the country and regional reports, synthesis reports, and other related documents and publications;
  • Produce updated information documentation on the project progresses in the ten countries on a regular basis;
  • Serve as the focal point of all communication issues for (governments, national and international partners, etc.) in the project;
  • Maintain records on all aspects of the project, including monitoring of activities and their outcomes; as well as minutes, decisions and recommendations of meetings and workshops;
  • Support the review and analysis of relevant LPI and other documents, the selection of proxies and indicators and preparation of the inception report;
  • Facilitate and support planning and organizing the project planning, inception, validation workshops and capacity building activities and support the organization of LPI-IFPRI regular meetings, take and circulate minutes, etc.;
  • Support the national M&E coordinators in identifying good practices and lessons learned, and in documenting this knowledge for a potential wider replication and use;
  • Contribute to the production of knowledge products (reports and publications) and coordinate peer review process.;

    Minimum Requirements:

    Education:


    First degree in Communication, Journalism, Social Science or other relevant field of study

    Experience:

    At least 5 years of relevant work experience.

    Skills and Competencies:

  • Jobholder requires extensive knowledge and conceptual understanding of a specialized field or a technical or administrative function, e.g. knowledge of relevant policies and procedures determines a course of action based on these guidelines with ability to analyze, interpret and modify complicated information.
  • Knowledge is typically acquired through technical training with certification.

    Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

    Position level: 2D.

    Birr 20,180 per month (Negotiable depending on experience, skill and salary history of the candidate)
