Biovision Farmer Communication Outreach Manager

The role

Farmer Communication Outreach will combine successful extension approaches within the Biovision FCP including Infonet-Biovision's Community Information Workers (CIWs), The Organic Farmer Information Officers (iTOF) and icipe’s Bioprospecting Community Libraries (BCLs).

Further collaboration with other Biovision-sponsored projects in the 4-H (human, animal, plant and environmental health) are also expected to benefit from this Outreach.

For these expanded responsibilities, a motivated and qualified manager is required to manage and coordinate all the Biovision Farmer Communication Outreach activities.

Specific duties

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Develop, in a participatory manner, a communication and outreach strategy that utilises the most successful and useful approaches in the FCP Outreach project deemed appropriate and adaptable to various user group needs in different areas;
  • Develop appropriate workplans for various project areas that utilise the Infonet- Biovision platform, farmer information hubs, iTOF officers, community information workers and community libraries to achieve proposed outcomes;
  • Manage, support and supervise the work of Infonet farmer information hubs managers, iTOF officers, community information workers (CIWs), and those responsible for community libraries. This will include but is not limited to:
  • Supporting field staff to carry out their responsilities in line with their contracts and ensuring effective and timely submission of monthly field reports - and with support of the FCP Project Assistant, upload them on Google site for sharing,
  • Organising capacity building events for the field staff and a few workshops for farmers when possible and resources permitting,
  • Developing information materials on setting up demonstration plots on ecological and sustainable farming practices and identifying partners to set them up,
  • Collaborating with suitable partners to develop guidelines for training farmers in value chain approaches as part of outreach methodologies;
  • Support the development of communication and outreach materials such as posters, banners, flyers, fact sheets, brochures, Infonet CDs with new or revised content, farmer participatory-produced videos, farmer magazines and modules, among others;
  • Develop project proposals including budgets for the Outreach project;
  • Integrate outreach project activities into other FCP projects;
  • Report periodically, and in a timely manner, to the FCP Coordinator on progress/performance/budget execution against the M&E framework and budgetlines of the project;
  • Collaborate with active like-minded organisations to improve and upscale FCP outreach activities among farmers in promoting organic and sustainable farming and environmental management technologies .

    Educational qualifications

  • At least a Bachelors degree, preferably in agriculture or environmental sciences or related fields.
  • A Bachelors degree in agriculture with proven longer-term extension work involving a good understanding of, and work experience with, small-scale farmers and their communication and training needs will be most preferred.

    Experience

    At least 5 years' experience in agricultural outreach/marketing, project planning and implementation and evaluation activities, working and networking with a variety of stakeholders including financial institutions, producers and government institutions, and rural CBOs and NGOs.

    Knowledge required for performing the job

    The successful candidate will be expected to have the following skills and abilities:

  • Good abilities in the use of ICT, including using web-based resources, especially for project management and remote communication.
  • Effective communication skills and fluency in both oral and written English.

    Disposition

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to take independent initiative in terms of day-to-day management, and be self-motivated and highly responsible.

    Reporting

    This position reports to the Biovision Farmer Communication Programme (FCP) Coordinator.

    In case of equal qualification, preference will be given to female applicants. The selected candidate should be available to start work immediately.
