Health Administration

by Osei Asibey Bonsu
(Ghana)

Most African countries if not all still have the hospital administrations managed by the central governments which makes the system not effective.

As we talk now Doctors and health workers in Ghana are not working. They laid down their tools almost ten days ago. A situation which is too bad. People don't know where to go for medical care.

In most of the advanced countries the hospitals are run independently from government. Doctors are made to sign contracts with the hospitals they work.

In Ghana for instance the terms of contract for Doctors at Kore-bu may be different from those at Komfo Anokye Hospital so in case there is a strike action it may not affect all doctors in Ghana but a particular hospital.

The hospital administration may engage doctors and fire them if they so wish. Doctors may be free to apply for where they want to work instead of this situation where postings are made by government and salaries are determined by the government.
