FCA in East Africa is focusing on fragile context in Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, and Uganda. Three key thematic areas are Right to Quality Education, Right to Livelihood, and Right to Peace.

Education sector is one of the key thematic areas and focus is on quality education. Ongoing projects focus on refugee or pastoralist education.

The regional education specialist main responsibility is to support FCA’s Right to Quality Education work at FCA’s East Africa country offices.

Main duties are strategic planning and education programme design, learning and knowledge translation and advocacy.

S/He will report to Kenya’s Country Director and also to FCA’s Head Office education team. The position is based in Kenya Country Office in Nairobi.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Liaise with relevant global, regional and country-level education partners (NGOs, government, and private partners, ACT Alliance) to coordinate and contextualize education activities in Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, and Uganda.
  • Provide technical expertise and advice to education programmes in Eastern Africa and globally in accordance with FCA Policies, Guidelines, and strategy, including planning, monitoring, reporting and evaluation
  • Contribute to the Education in Emergencies (EiE) response plans and education in development research, proposal development and project design, with particular focus on Teacher Professional Development, ensuring that provision is made for fulfilling the right of all children, in particular girls and other excluded children, to education.
  • Undertake field visits as necessary, to monitor implementation of education projects, provide support to the work planning, prioritization and capacity building of partners
  • Facilitate teamwork with relevant colleagues at Head Office and in the Country Offices to enable innovations and piloting
    of new solutions for Right for Quality Education.
  • Contribute to fundraising efforts to plan new education-related projects to help meet fundraising targets in the region and globally.
  • Support the monitoring and research activities in the region and support communication of evidence to key stakeholder groups through education briefs, forums, research reports, etc.
  • Participate development of global FCA Community of Practice in Education, in collaboration Senior Global Education Specialist.
  • Participate in capacity building of FCA education project staff in programme design, research, and M&E of education-related programming.
  • Identify potential opportunities in the region and build, develop and maintain key partnerships, networks and alliance to advance advocacy efforts.
  • Support FCA global advocacy efforts through representing FCA at global forums (including INEE Advocacy WG, Global Teacher In Crisis Context WG, etc.), and identify opportunities to advance advocacy efforts globally.

    Competence and Personal Requirements:
  • Masters degree or equivalent work experience
  • In depth work experience in education in development cooperation and humanitarian assistance in INGO sector
  • Experience of education work in fragile contexts is an asset
  • Good knowledge on the context
  • Good facilitation skills
  • Good interpersonal skills

    Language skills: English, local languages is an asset
    The fixed-term contract for this position will be made until December 2018 with four months’ probation period, starting as soon as possible. The compensation is based on FCA Compensation System and depends on prior work experience.
