During the second term 2016, Mary Leakey High School in Lower Kabete imposed a compulsory fee of sh. 5000 for each student per term allegedly to motivate teachers, have the teachers go for a fully funded trip to Dubai and remedial classes for students.
This is on top of a contribution of sh.2500 per term per student for school bus.
Other unlawful fees introduced include a one time payment of sh.5000 per student to enhance school security and a yet to be declared amount allegedly to build a school fence.
Additionally, students are forced to buy school uniform and school supplies in school at inflated prices. On entry to form 3, every student is supplied with additional 2 pairs of uniforms at inflated prices irrespective of whether they need them or not.
Several parents' meetings are called via SMS within a few days to the meeting and at least 2 times a term and failure to turn up or turning up late attracts a penalty of sh. 1000.
Are these fees justified?
Woe unto you if you come from far and cannot make it to these meetings which are almost always to ask for additional funds that are not receipted.
