Women Human Rights Defenders International Coalition

The Women Human Rights Defenders International Coalition (WHRD IC) is looking for an experienced writer to produce a ‘Global Report on the State of Affairs of Women Human Rights Defenders’. This report will draw on the analyses of member organisations of the WHRD IC over the last 5 years, as well as case studies of individual and groups of WHRDs.

Overview of the Project:

The Women Human Rights Defenders International Coalition (WHRD IC) has identified the need to undertake an assessment of the situation of women human rights defenders since the International Campaign on Women Human Rights Defenders was launched. This research will contribute to review the impact of the campaign, and provide a general overview on the situation of women human rights defenders in different countries.

Intended for women human rights defenders (WHRDs) and policy makers, the Global Report will be developed as a resource to inform policy advocacy on the concerns of women human rights defenders.

The objective is to carry out a qualitative assessment of the general situation of WHRDs, analysing the contextual trends, violations and strategies used to advance the concerns of women human rights defenders.

Scope

Using existing literature produced by members of the Coalition and Claiming Rights, Claiming Justice: A Guidebook on Women Human Rights Defenders as a reference document, the report will:

  • analyse the major contextual trends influencing the situation of women human rights defenders;
  • identify violations (gender-specific violations and gendered consequences including structural forms of discrimination that violate the rights of women human rights defenders;
  • illustrate through case studies strategies that have been used to advance the concerns of women human rights defenders.
