Up to seven research studentships (fees at Home/EU rate plus stipend and use of a University laptop) are available for students to undertake PhDs full-time or part-time, to start 1st October or as soon as possible after this date.

The School of Arts comprises six subject areas. Each of these already has a thriving research culture, with research centres, research students, and a strong and varied range of research projects among staff.

The areas in which the studentships will be available will be:

  • Dance
  • Drama, Theatre & Performance Studies
  • English Literature
  • English Language & Linguistics
  • Film, Media & Cultural Studies
  • History
  • Theology & Religious Studies

    Successful applicants will be expected:

  • To have a masters’ degree (preferable) or a first or upper second class degree in a relevant subject
  • To have the potential to engage in innovative research and to complete a PhD within 3 years full-time or 5 years part-time
  • To become active members of the School’s research community
  • To be willing to undertake teaching assistance or other appropriate assistance within the School
  • Students for whom English is not their first language must meet the required minimum level of English language proficiency (IELTS 7 in all skills, or equivalents)

    Research studentships will be for three years (full-time) or five years (part-time), subject to annual review of student progress and successful upgrading from MPhil to PhD.

    They will pay fees at the current Home/EU rate (currently £3,000 p.a. full-time, £1,500 p.a. part time) and annual stipend of £4,000 (full-time) or £2,000 (part-time).

    In return students are required to contribute up to 2 hours a week (full-time) or 1 hour a week (part-time) teaching or other assistance.
