Earthwatch Institute Kenya (EWK) has commenced a study to develop resilience towards climate change among Samburu communities, a component of which involves climate change mapping funded by Rio Tinto.

The Project Officer will drive the initiative to build upon current climate change and land use information held within early warning programs, Geographic Information System (GIS) databases and climate models for the benefit of pastoralist communities.

S/He will be in charge of establishing a GIS capability within the EWK Centre for Drylands Research in Wamba, Samburu, and developing a community-based ecological monitoring programme.

Major functions:

EWK intends to recruit an individual who can consolidate and build on the data that it has collected in the Samburu region over the past five years, including information on vegetation types and water resources, to create comprehensive land use, land cover and climate change impacts maps which can be used as a basis to track change and the success of adaptation strategies of the communities.


  • A Master’s degree in Ecology, Geography, Environmental Sciences, Natural Resources or other relevant field.

  • Knowledge of Land-Use and Land-Cover Scenarios in relation to Climate Change.

  • At least 3 years’ relevant professional experience in the use of GIS software to compile maps, perform analyses, and develop applications.

  • An in-depth knowledge of ESRI GIS software and its applications.

  • Project management skills.

  • Report writing experience.

  • A proven ability to work both in a team and independently, and to meet strict deadlines within budget.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, including fluency in English and Kiswahili.
