Programme Officer - UNEP

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level.

This post is located in UNEP/DEWA at the Nairobi duty station.

Under the overall supervision of the Chief of the Scientific Assessment Branch (SAB) and the direct supervision of the Senior Environmental Affairs Officer, Integrated Environmental Assessment Section, the incumbent will perform the following.


  • Overall coordination and production of the UNEP Year Book series

  • Programme Review and Development: Organize an annual review to assess the impact of the UNEP Year Book;

  • Provide inputs to the SAB programme of work and assist with any other activities related to the Integrated Environmental Assessment Section and DEWA as it may be required.

  • Administrative responsibilities: Ensure that agreements with partner institutions are prepared according to UNEP guidelines, and that partners meet all their contractual obligations

    Core Competencies:

  • Professionalism: Knowledge of UNEP institutional mandates and polices;

  • Ability to coordinate the production of a major environmental assessment report;

  • Demonstrated ability to identify key strategic issues and to provide innovate technical and scientific inputs and guidance;

  • Conceptual analytical and evaluative skills to conduct independent research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources.

  • Takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work

  • Ability to rapidly analyze and integrate diverse information from various sources;

  • Up-to-date knowledge on current topics and issues affecting the environment. Communication:

  • Excellent drafting ability; Speaks clearly and effectively; Listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately;

  • Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

  • Planning and organizing: proven ability to plan and organize work, develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments.

  • Teamwork: works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise.


  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental science with particular emphasis on environmental assessments and early warning.

  • A first university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Work Experience:

  • A minimum of 7 years experience some of which at the international level in environmental assessments, writing, reporting and editing.

  • Experience in designing and coordinating the production of an environmental assessment report is desirable.

  • Experience in fund-raising and in the UN system would be an asset.

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

  • Knowledge of other United Nations languages an asset.

  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office, email, internet) are required.
