Programme Officer – IUCN SSC African Elephant Specialist Group

Location: Nairobi, Kenya

The position reports to both the Chair of the IUCN SSC AfESG and the Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa.

Under the direct supervision of the Chair of the IUCN SSC African Elephant Specialist Group (AfESG), the Under the direct supervision of the Chair of the IUCN SSC African Elephant Specialist Group (AfESG), the Programme Officer’s main responsibility to maintain technical liaison and regular exchange within and amongst the membership of the AfESG, governmental, non-governmental agencies, donor organizations and their counterparts on issues related to African elephant conservation and management, and to oversee the day-to-day administrative work and technical coordination of the activities of the AfESG Secretariat.

Requirements:

  • An advanced degree: preferably PhD in biological or natural sciences, or a Masters with at least five years of experience with developing and implementing multidisciplinary projects conservation in Africa

  • An ability to work co-operatively with others, both in an office situation and with members of the voluntary network
  • A demonstrated ability to work independently and without daily supervision and guidance
  • A good grounding in conservation biology and taxonomy
  • A good understanding of the practical aspects of biodiversity conservation, including species conservation policy
  • Proven ability to conceptualise, innovate, plan and execute ideas as well as impart knowledge and skills
  • Excellent analytical and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated writing and editing skills; experience with desktop publishing would be an added advantage
  • General computer literacy and experience with GIS
  • A strong command of English as a working language is essential: written and spoken French would be a distinct advantage.
