Programme Officer, Poverty and Environment - Nairobi

Employer: United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP)

Location: Nairobi, Kenya

The Programme Officer will be working in the UNDP - UNEP Poverty and Environment Team located in UNEP’s Division of Regional Cooperation (DRC). This Team is responsible for implementing the UNDP-UNEP Poverty and Environment Initiative (PEI) in Africa.

Qualification and Experience:

Education:Advanced university degree in international relations, economics, environmental management, development studies or a first university degree with a relevant combination of professional and academic qualifications.

Experience:At least five years of progressive responsibility in national or International development and/or environmental issues, including working experience in developing countries.

Language requirements English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the advertised post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French or any other official UN languages would be an asset.

Other desirable skills Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Lotus Notes and other IT applications.

Competencies

Professionalism: Demonstrated professional competence in the field of sustainable development and/or good understanding of links between ecosystem services and human well-being. Strong analytical skills and ability to analyze complex issues with a high degree of flexibility. Experience in project management and ability to work under pressure. Good knowledge of the UN system.

Planning and organizing: Proven ability to identify priority activities and assignments and make necessary adjustments as required, foresee risks and allow for contingencies when planning.

Teamwork: Experience and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds; proven record in working collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; Ability to take initiative and to work independently, as well as be part of a team

Communication: Ability to write and speak clearly and effectively; proven ability to prepare reports and conduct presentations, demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
