PhD Studentships in Neuro-psychiatric at Brighton and Sussex Medical School

International Scholarships » Funds for Students » Educational Grants

Making a clinical diagnosis and identifying an appropriate treatment strategy for patients with neuro-psychiatric SLE is often not straightforward.

Cognitive changes;

  • Could originate from the biological effects of disease itself, as it affects brain tissue,
  • Could be a general consequence of being ill, or
  • Could originate from the treatment, for example, with corticosteroids.

    Cognitive changes can be chronic (long-term), or acute (short-term, perhaps associated with a sudden relapse, and a flare-up of disease activity in the brain).

    More specific cognitive tests are expected to be able to identify the causes of such cognitive impairment in SLE.

    Modern quantitative MRI measurements of normal-appearing tissue can identify subtle biological changes in tissue, invisible by conventional radiology, and provide an objective and independent measure of tissue degradation, both acute and chronic.

    Applicants wishing to discuss the studentships informally should contact the supervisors directly via email.
