PhD Studentships in Neuro-psychiatric at Brighton and Sussex Medical SchoolMaking a clinical diagnosis and identifying an appropriate treatment strategy for patients with neuro-psychiatric SLE is often not straightforward.
Cognitive changes;
i) could originate from the biological effects of disease itself, as it affects brain tissue,
ii) could be a general consequence of being ill, or
iii) could originate from the treatment, for example, with corticosteroids.
Cognitive changes can be chronic (long-term), or acute (short-term, perhaps associated with a sudden relapse, and a flare-up of disease activity in the brain).
More specific cognitive tests are expected to be able to identify the causes of such cognitive impairment in SLE.
Modern quantitative MRI measurements of normal-appearing tissue can identify subtle biological changes in tissue, invisible by conventional radiology, and provide an objective and independent measure of tissue degradation, both acute and chronic.

Stipends will be paid at current MRC rates. Home/EU fees will be paid and a consumables budget will be made available for each project.

Eligibility for funding
Projects funded by BSMS are generally open to students from all countries, but fees are usually only paid at the UK/EU rate.
International students would thus be liable for top up fees.
