PhD Scholarships at Groningen University

Eight PhD scholarships are available for joint projects between the University Medical Center Groningen - Graduate School of Medical Sciences and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences - FMNS.

Interested applicants for 1 of the 38 projects are invited to fill out the application form and they will receive an automatic reply and your data will be filed.

Fundamental requirements:

  • A Master degree in a relevant field.
  • Good command of English (spoken, written, listening and reading comprehension).
  • PhD-students should have a minimum of 580 TOEFL or 80 TOEFL iBT or equivalent.

Candidates will be selected in two rounds.

In a first round (deadline for application 01 May), about 50 candidates will be selected on the basis of application materials.

Each of these candidates will then be asked to provide additional information (e.g. a complete CV, letter of motivation, academic transcripts (undergraduate and master’s level coursework), 2-3 reference letters (three preferred) written by individuals who know the candidate very well).

Subsequently, they will be brought in contact with a potential thesis advisor and asked to write a research proposal.

In a second round, a definite selection will take place on the basis of the application materials, the project proposal, and a (tele-)interview.

The final selection of candidates will occur in late June, at which time potential supervisors will express their willingness to host the candidate.

Students awarded UE scholarships are expected to enroll as a cohort in the fall.
